RIGHT GUYS THIS IS MY MASTERPOST PLEASE USE IT FOR GOOD. YOU CAN STEAL THE LINKS AND PUT THEM N YOUR OWN MASTERPOSTS IF YOU LIKE I DONT MIND. :3
Here’s the tutorial I was asked to do - my peacock hair! :) I hope this gives everyone a more detailed look on how I did my hair. If I missed something or something isn’t clear, please feel free to ask me a question so I can add in more detail or clarify anything in this tutorial. :) Also, make sure to enlarge the photos in a new tab for a clearer view of what’s going on! Here’s what you’ll need:
Hair dye ( of course, right? ;) ): I used six different shades for this style. I used a purple (Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Purple), a violet (Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Fuchsia with Adore’s Violet Gem), a pink (Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Magenta with Adore’s Rich Fuchsia), a green (Punky Colour’s Apple Green), a teal (Ion Color Brilliance in Teal), and a turquoise (Adore’s Turquoise with Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Aqua) dye. Of course, you can use any brand that you’d like for those shades, these are just the brands I prefer to use/mix together to form the shade of dye I want. The Ion Color Brilliance Brights were Purchase at Sally Beauty and the Adore and Punky Colour were purchase on Amazon.
Mixing bowls and brushes: I purchased mine from Sally Beauty. When I didn’t have enough bowls I used plastic cups with the top parts cut off so I could reach the dye easily with my brush, but not low enough so the brush would knock the cup over if it was left in there. It’s best to have one bowl/cup and one brush per color so you don’t have to keep washing the brush and drying the brush over and over. It really wastes a lot of product and time.
Little clips: These are pretty necessary to do this. You need tons of little clips to keep the colored pieces of hair away from the others while you’re going from section to section. I think I got mine either at the dollar store or at Walmart. You can get a pack of 24 count clips at Walmart for under $2.
A helping hand: It’s really difficult to do this one on your own. I usually do my hair by myself, but this one I had to give in and ask my Mom to do a lot of the work so the areas where the dye was and how the dye was applied was more exact. It would be pretty much impossible to do the back of your head on your own as well. It’s also very time consuming to do because of how many sections on colors there are so be aware of that if you’re trying to do your hair in a hurry. Last time we did this it took about 3 hours to just apply the dye! Also, if you choose to do this on your own … challenge accepted!?
Gloves: Don’t want stained hands!
A junky shirt: Does anyone else have a shirt that they always bleach/color their hair in? If so, put it on! You don’t want to get any dye on your clothes because it’s pretty hard to get it out.
Before getting started!
As you can see from the photos I have bleached my roots, as my hair is naturally very dark brown/black, and toned out a good amount of the yellow tones left over. It’s important to have light blonde hair when applying alternative colors as they show up much better and truer to their shade than on darker hair colors. I didn’t bother to bleach out the rest of my hair so you can see some of the residual colors throughout the length of my hair. You can choose to bleach your hair or not, that’s up to you. If you want to bleach your hair, do it a bit beforehand to make sure your hair is in good condition to hold the dye as damaged hair doesn’t hold color as well.
Get everything ready. You’ll need your dyes, your brushes, your gloves, your shirt, your hair coloring buddy, and to make sure the area around you is protected from the dye (putting down newspaper or a drop cloth on the floor can save the carpet).
Now you’re ready!
First, mix the colors you want to mix together. I mixed together: Adore in Violet Gem + Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Fuchsia, Adore in Rich Fuchsia + Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Magenta and Adore in Aquamarine + Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Aqua. Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Purple, Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Teal, and Punky Colour in Apple Green were all left unmixed. I like to mix my colors to get the perfect shade I’m looking for, but if you don’t want to purchase more dyes, just skip this step!
I choose to do my undercut first to establish the line for where the sectioned colors start. For my undercut I choose the Adore in Violet Gem + Ion Color Brilliance Brights in Fuchsia mixture.
Start by making a part down from the crown of your head to your hair line. How wide you make it will determine the width of your squares. Clip the rest of your hair to the side to make sure it’s out of the way.
Next, choose how many squares of color you want going down the line. I did 4 squares perviously, but I wanted the colors a little bolder so I’m doing 3 and 4 squares, depending on where they are on my head.
Take the comb and make a part across for the square, keeping the rest of the hair in the line pushed forward.
Using your brush, place some of the color around the edges square making sure it’s all sectioned off. This helps to keep all of the hairs together.
From there on, color the rest of the strand of hair within the square until it’s saturated with dye.
Once the hair is saturated, twist the hair around as if you’re twirling it. When it’s all twirled together, take one of your small clips and clip the hair down within the square of color, making sure it doesn’t touch any other pieces of hair.
Continue doing this down the line you made with your comb.
As you do the colors, try not to place the same ones next to each other. You’ll definitely have some of the colors diagonally from each other, but try to make sure they’re not directly next to one another.
Keep going across until you’ve gotten by your ear. Once all of the hair on the front half of your head is done, you can start on the back.
Make a part from the crown of the head all the way down to your neck. Do the same thing as the top part of you head with the sectioning, coloring, twisting, and clipping until you’re done with your entire head.
Let the dye sit for a while. I usually leave it on for a few hours. You may want to put a shower cap on your hair so the dye doesn’t dry out.
Take out all of the clips from your hair and get ready to rinse it out. You will want to wash out your hair in cold water to help lock in the color and prevent bleeding.
Either air dry or blow dry your hair, depending on your preference and TA-DA! you have lovely peacock hair!
I hope everyone liked this highly requested tutorial and that it helps you out if you ever decide to do your hair like this or if you just like to read/look at tutorials! Also, as a side note, please do not save these photos to re-upload them onto Tumblr or somewhere else. I’d like to keep this tutorial linked to this blog as much as possible. Thank you! :) Happy hair coloring~!
So, you put your Windows computer to sleep for the night. You come back the next day all eager to wake it up and put it right to work on that thing you’ve been working on and ….
Oh no, this won’t do at all — you’ve seemed to have lost all pressure…
I wanted to share some knowledge I picked up during 8 months spent unemployed. This is a conglomerate from personal experience, trial and error, and input from other friends who have been through the same.
This is really long, and I hope none of it is really painfully obvious, but I hope it helps somebody out.
