ARGH LET ME TELL YOU A THING.

I saw this little article about “10 Reasons Why Frozen is the most modern disney movie” or something blahblahblah, and reason number one was that Elsa’s parents were abusive.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

noooooooooo. no no no no no.

FROLLO was abusive. MOTHER GOTHEL WAS ABUSIVE.

Elsa’s parents did their darn best to make sure none of their daughters got hurt. Her dad didn’t know how to handle ice powers! He didn’t have ice powers! Nobody else had ice powers! No! All he knew was that Elsa had to learn to control her powers, and he did his darn best to help her. Maybe he didn’t go about it correctly. Maybe he accidentally contributed to her anxiety issues. MAYBE HE MESSED HER UP.

But it wasn’t on purpose. 

Look at this man. Look how much he cares for his daughter. He’s not afraid to touch her. He’s not afraid to hold her. He gave her the gloves FOR HER OWN PROTECTION, and Elsa turned them into a prison because she was afraid of herself. 

This movie is fascinating, not because it showed abusive parents, but because it showed LOVING, WELL MEANING, ADORABLE parents trying to help their daughter in the best way they could. Even if they did it wrong. Even if they didn’t have all the answers. They TRIED.

And that’s the saddest part. Because sometimes, even when parents try their best, they can still mess their kids up. It’s reality. But I don’t think Elsa ever blamed him for trying. 

Sure, Frollo was abusive (and visited Quasimodo every day, and presumably got him materials to build his dioramas, and taught him to read).  Yeah, Mother Gothel was abusive (and knew Rapunzel’s favorite foods and made them for her, and helped her cultivate hobbies to pass the time in the tower, and often traveled days on end to find Rapunzel the things she needed to make special paint colors for her murals).

Here’s the thing:  people are complex.  Bad people can sometimes commit (unnecessarily, unintentionally, unfoundedly) good acts, and good people can (accidentally, desperately, or even maliciously) do really bad things.  Sometimes people aren’t either good or bad — they’re just people, they’re faceted, they’re flawed.

Were Elsa’s parents bad people?  I don’t really think they were, no, but they weren’t exactly good people either.  Despite trying to help Elsa in doing so, they hid their strange daughter away from the world and let her feel like she SHOULD be hidden.  They let her feel like a monster. 

(It’s a wonder she didn’t become one.)

Whether or not Elsa (or Anna!  Anna suffered too!) ever blamed them for it, her parents were abusive.  Absolutely.  Without a doubt. 

Good intentions do not absolve abuse.

Because he is a straight white guy and Tumblr isn’t always right.

Tumblr needs to hop down off it’s high fucking horse and instead of turning against a potential role model and ally to all that they’ve been fucking preaching about JUST BECAUSE HE’S PRIVILEGED AND WHITE, maybe make him an icon because he’s not rapping about disrespecting women. He’s making a small change. But because he grew up with a well structured family environment and he was able to afford everything he desired, he’s suddenly the enemy. 

Macklemore hate is proof that Tumblr’s brand of militant social justice is just made up of a bunch of people with either a victimization fetish and/or a hateful, angry heart seeking acceptable targets, and they then proceed to poison the people that really just want to do good, ultimately mangling a good cause beyond recognition.

And 99% of people who complain about the first lyric of “Same Love” have never actually listened beyond that. Somebody tells them “The song starts with ‘when i was in the third grade i thought that i was gay’” and they start clutching their pearls because surely the whole song is just some straight dude making lgbtqa rights all about him and how he thinks because he thought he was gay when he was eight he knows all about it. And maybe it’s not the best way to word the beginning of the song, BUT IF YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN OR READ BEYOND THAT it turns out it’s a segue into talking about ridiculous stereotypes and preconceived ideas about sexuality and questioning why someone would think it was a bad idea to be gay in the first place. And then it goes on to discuss the homophobia inherent in the music genre he’s a part of and calling his peers out on slurs and derogatory language and hypocrisy in religion, and it beautifully features Mary fucking Lambert, and goddammit I had trouble driving home when I first heard it in the car because I was fucking crying.

Macklemore is a privileged individual who consistently and vocally acknowledges his privileges and strives to use it to do legitimate good, which is everything Tumblr claims it wants, but as soon as he starts, they scream for him to shut up. Because their need to rage and scream and hate and wallow in willful ignorance is more important to them than seeing actual change take place anywhere in the world.

so glad i came across this post. you have to remember that tumblr :so called “activists” like to comment on anything that seems potentially bad, even if that means over-shadowing great points and progress that a lot of people, both gay and straight have wished for.

i did not do this to show how i am ‘lying’ to men or anyone, it’s not about how you, as a man, should feel about it - it’s about myself. 

to me your statement sounds as if the left side of this picture is something awful or horrible. and no, it’s not. it is my face - with and without makeup. and whether i chose to wear it or not is MY AND JUST MY decision. and when i do, i do it for myself - so that i feel good about myself - not for you.

Women aren’t born with makeup on, guy. Just like penises don’t circumcise themselves, and air conditioning isn’t ‘natural’. Makeup is no different than brushing your hair, or bubblegum. It’s elective. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that you’re not very loved by the ladies.

Male logic:

1. Treat makeup-less women like shit for looking “less attractive”
2. Pressure women to wear makeup in order to receive basic respect
