I can’t believe Australians thought Beyoncé was talkin about Sprite

What?

Haven’t you seen the Lemonade Discourse?

Nope. Not at all.

Basically, Australians (and apparently other countries) refer to Sprite/lemon lime soda as “lemonade” and they don’t actually have lemonade like we do here i.e., a sweetened lemon juice based drink. So “when life gives you lemons” apparently isn’t even like, a saying there.

Oh wait yeah I did see that. I think they call lemonade, lemon cordial.

The FUCK is a cordial

Cordial? Like a telephone cord? As in Telephone part 2? Beyoncé and lady Gaga ? The ‘Nati strikes again

The sips are here for the taking, babes

What y'all don’t have cordial there? It’s like concentrated syrup you use to make drinks

Most places use real lemon juice for lemonade but we just call flavored syrups syrup.

u a lie we have cordials

Where the hell do they call them cordials? In florida? I’ve never heard that term in my life.

Wait this is a whole new discourse your telling me you guys don’t have CORDIAL. like lemonade is lemon cordial thing I get that fine whatever BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER KINDS OF CORDIAL. Like red cordial? Or fruit cordial? Or shit there’s a whole damn shelf at the supermarket with a sign saying ‘CORDIAL’ wtf do you all call that shit?????

I’ve literally never heard that word in my life in reference to beverages but apparently we have them.

Honestly I’m just scared and confused rn the world of sweet fruity water beverages is so much more complicated than I needed to ever think about

wait does that mean you guys don’t have this amazingness:

or this?

?????

I have never before seen this misshapen bottles in my life.

they’re amazingly delicious, the second one is a powder mix basically. Lemonade is just lemon juice (can be bottled or fresh squeezed), water, and sugar. No carbonation. It’s delicious tbh.

That sounds exactly like good lemon cordial tbh and I drink lemon cordial ALLLLLLLL the time so I feel ya on it’s deliciousness.

Gonna look up American lemonade recipes on the internet and try and recreate this shit at home.

Lemonade:

Squeeze some lemons
Add like three times as much water
Add sugar til it tastes good

If you wanna get fancy, put some fresh strawberries in it and let them soak a lil bit. Add vodka for fun.

Watch me fuck this up and love it anyway 👍

We have lemonade in Britain too. AND Sprite. They’re kind of the same thing though. ‘Lemonade’ is usually just the unbranded.

It’s the bomb lmao

Why is it clear? That’s not the same thing lol.

It’s lemonade omg. There’s like hundreds and hundreds of brands it’s like Sprite and 7UP here I think?? It’s fizzy. It just tastes a little bit different :’)

Lemonade is not carbonated. Sprite is a whole separate thing.

Lemonade IS carbonated. All those pictures of the bottles I just added? They’re all lemonade. And they’re all carbonated duh. Sprite isn’t a separate thing, it’s just counted as another BRAND of lemonade here.

I don’t know how to explain this to you but y'all stole the word lemonade and put it on something that is not lemonade and you’re wrong and you’ve been wrong all your life.

Sprite is lemon lime soda. Lemonade is a tangy lemon juice based non carbonated refreshing summer beverage

Well here, lemonade is the carbonated “fizzy” version. Lemon cordial is the uncarbonated or “still” version. It’s been that way for years and years in Britain lmaoooo. “Stealing words” really??

We literally just have different terms for things. Like your chips are our crisps. And our chips are your french fries?

Chips here are the cut potato product in strips, that are fried & you have with a burger or something. (Our chips are thick though, none of that thin mcdonalds french fry nonsense.) Crisps are the thinly sliced, dried potato products that come in bags.

You can’t say “that’s not lemonade!” when the product bottle literally says “Lemonade.” It’s just what your country thinks is lemonade differs to what another country calls lemonade. France, Spain, the majority of Europe have this kind of carbonated lemonade also 😊

Cordial is like a juice. My Grandma makes Eldiflower cordial.

Exactly. Which is why the non carbonated is lemon CORDIAL. Because juice drinks aren’t carbonated. Because it’s made from actual juice. Lemonade isn’t made with actual lemon juice, just lemon flavoring. Like we have orangeade, cherryade. And they’re all carbonated.

Lemonade IS made from lemon juice like I just said that!!

why are they calling soda lemonade?

The Lemonade discourse is the funniest thing to happen in this dumpster fire year 😂😂😂😂

Wtf did I just read….

Sooo millions of people literally don’t understand why Beyonce named her album Lemonade?! Imagine thinking that she named her whole album after some soda drink. I just—

Lemonade with fresh lemon juice, water and sugar dates back to ancient Egypt.  That stuff ya’ll call lemonade in Europe is just pop.

You mean soda.

tbh, as an australian, a lot of us definitely have a concept of what lemonade is. For example, i’m aware of the fact that sprite is lemonade without it actually being lemonade, if that makes sense. It’s australian lemonade. You see kids serving lemonade on the side of the road (although it doesn’t happen with us) but it’s more of a concept than a concrete thing.

does that make sense?

but what do you call it
like isnt that confusing bc theyre two different drinks with the same name

no they’re the same drink both taste of lemons in the same way.
Similar to how you have clear and cloudy apple juice.

sprite does not taste of lemons
san pellegrino, yes, sprite, no

also, clear vs cloudy apple juice?????

tf is clear apple juice? Cider??

See, I was thinking of the cloudy apple juice as cider. And like, yeah, what else could it be but apple juice vs apple cider? Which are quite different drinks in the US (no clue about elsewhere).

In Australia apple juice and apple cider both come in clear and cloudy, the difference how processed it is. Clear is more processed than cloudy and I think also has added sugar sometimes. If you say “apple cider” I’m gonna think you’re talking about an alcoholic drink, where as “apple juice” is non-alcoholic.

Lmao. Australia we have cordial which is just Syrup of all different flavours. We have lemonade which is carbonated lemon drink. Lemon squash (or pub squash) which is more lemony, yellow and carbonated. We know that ‘lemonade’ that is made by hand and sold on streets isn’t bubbly. Lemonade can mean different things just how we have chips (packet crisps), chips (hot potato chips), chips (fries) and chips (gambling chips). It’s not that hard.

australia heavily relies on context for its words. as long as CONTEXTUALLY something makes sense we understand. under the context of homemade lemonade we’ll be aware this is made from juice and water etc. the CLOSEST thing we tend to have to that is cordial, although cordial always felt more akin to kool aid in terms of end result (though i think kool aid is a powder, not a syrup iirc).

lemonade tends to refer to two varieties of carbonated drinks here, and generally u gotta mention a brand in order to get the right one, those being the clear sorts like sprite and 7up or the yellow Lemon Squash sorts like Solo (its always been pub squash to me personally but idk how much of that was a Mega Cheapie Australian Brand thing)

so while lemonade might be completly different here, america-centric media is such a Big Thing that many people are aware that Traditional Lemonade isnt fizzy, nor nearly as artificial as what we refer to lemonade as.
