So, I just had this thought in the shower, the setting of Portal is the Computer Aided Enrichment Center - the CAEC. Try saying that out loud.

I imagine some of the tech guys probably used that instead of saying Computer Aided Enrichment Center over and over again while chatting; imagine GLaDOS in the background, trying to figure out exactly why they keep saying ‘cake’ and wondering what the hell this ‘cake’ even is.

To the point that she dedicated her information core to define exactly what one is and it’s composition (though after years of activity it apparently got corrupted and starts including less safe ingredients). Hence GLaDOS’s almost pathological obsession with the thing after she’s killed everyone off and starts testing the people she has in storage.

It would also give a deeper meaning to ‘the cake is a lie’ that Rattman left all over the facility. As far as he knows, GLaDOS is just making a threat in the form of a pun.

“You will be baked *garbled* and then there will be CAEC.” Because after the baking, there’ll be nothing left but the CAEC.

And even that has further meaning when you consider that after the first few test rooms, the computer isn’t aiding you anymore, and there’s hardly any enriching going on when everything is trying to kill you. The very concept of the place is a lie.
