Ah, more hate. I thought we had gotten past that.
I do think I’m pretty funny, but I suppose I’m not really the best judge of character since it’s obviously not exactly an objective opinion. I also don’t think I’m arrogant, and I don’t think I’m a bitch, but I guess that, again, that’s up to other people to decide.
You’re free to feel that way about me. I can’t stop you. However, you can’t expect me to change for you, either. As Popeye once said,
And that’s not going to stop just because you don’t like me.
I spent quite a while trying to figure out what I did to provoke such a reaction from you, and I think I finally figured it out. It’s probably about this post. For those of you on mobile or just too lazy to click the link, it’s a post about how kids don’t care about the race of Disney characters. They relate to characters based on the character, not the skin tone.
My comment was, “In which liteRALLY THE ONLY PEOPLE TO FEEL VICTIMIZED BY DISNEY ARE BUTTHURT TUMBLR USERS WHO TRY TO USE NON VICTIMIZED CHILDREN AS JUSTIFICATION FOR COMPLAINING.”
I’m not going to apologize for it, although the inevitable backlash I’m about to receive would probably be significantly mitigated if I did. But if I apologized, I wouldn’t mean it, and a long time ago, I promised myself I would never give a false apology.
I would, however, like to explain myself because evidently I was not clear enough in the original comment.
Tumblr has this tendency to create victim complexes where there are none.
Remember when Frozen came out?
Remember how people were annoyed that there were no POC in the movie?
The movie set in Denmark?
Allow me to show you the statistics for the ethnic groups of Denmark:
Danish 97%; other (incl. Scandinavian) 2%; Faroese & Inuit 1%.
97% of people are Danish. Guess what color skin Danish people tend to have?
Yet tumblr flipped its sh*t over the fact that there weren’t any POC in the movie. For whatever reason, showing white people in the setting of a primarily white country was racist and bigoted.
I’m going to say something that I really hate that I have to use as justification for my comments because people’s race shouldn’t determine what people are and aren’t allowed to say: I’m a POC.
But even if I weren’t, my argument is just as valid as it is right now.
Tumblr’s justification for freaking out about Disney not having enough diversity is that children are going to feel left out. Where are the role models of various races for these kids to look up to?
SPOILER ALERT: ROLE MODELS DON’T HAVE TO BE THE SAME GODDAMN RACE TO BE ROLE MODELS.
You know who I find inspiring? Beyoncé.
You know who’s not black? Me.
LOOK AT THESE KIDS.
DOES SHE LOOK LIKE SHE THINKS SHE’S NOT ALLOWED TO LIKE BELLE BECAUSE SHE’S ASIAN AND BELLE’S WHITE?
NO.
DOES THAT LITTLE GIRL LOOK LIKE SHE DOESN’T RELATE TO TIANA’S CHARACTER BECAUSE SHE’S WHITE AND TIANA’S BLACK?
NO.
DOES THIS GIRL LOOK LIKE SHE GIVES A SINGLE FLYING [DOLPHIN NOISE] THAT CINDERELLA IS WHITE?
NO.
NO.
NO.
Fun fact: Kids don’t care about race. TUMBLR does. By insisting that characters be created to fill the quota of characters of a certain race, you are being inherently racist. You are insisting that a character’s CHARACTER take backseat to their SKIN TONE. By definition, that is racist.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Guess who said that? Go ahead. Guess.
Would I like to see more diversity in Disney movies?
Yes.
I would love to see Disney take stories from traditionally non-white cultures and make movies out of them. There are so many great stories waiting to be told out there that are part of a POC’s culture.
If there were a Disney movie about a Hispanic princess, you can bet your ass that this Latina would be first in line for tickets.
But guess what?
There’s not, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean that Disney is racist. It means that Disney is trying to make money, and I don’t blame them.
This is exactly like when tumblr talked about wanting a Wonder Woman movie. Would I go and watch it? Absolutely. But most people wouldn’t. Even if all of tumblr went to see it, it wouldn’t even begin to touch the number of people that would go to see a Superman movie. So why would a movie studio spend tons of money on a movie that only a very select portion of the population (read: tumblr) would go to see? Answer: They wouldn’t. They wouldn’t because that would be monumentally stupid.
Just because someone doesn’t do what you want doesn’t make them racist.
Just because someone doesn’t pander to your every whim doesn’t make them racist.
JUST BECAUSE DISNEY DOESN’T MAKE THE MOVIE YOU WANT DOESN’T MAKE THEM RACIST.
You’re allowed to complain. You’re allowed to be upset that things didn’t go the way you wanted them to. But at least be honest about why you’re upset. You’re not upset that kids don’t have role models of their own race. You’re upset that you didn’t get what you wanted. And you’re allowed to be. But at least come by it honestly.
I wasn’t trying to “rub against your every nerve.” I was just pointing out something that I thought would be obvious to everyone: Take responsibility for your actions. If you want to complain, you can. But don’t lie about why you’re complaining.
That’s literally all I’m asking for.
Ok, reblogging again because I now had time to read through the initial post which I found wonderful. sorry for seeming...
