Yes, Pink Diamond really did need to become Rose Quartz

nobrandminda:

Pink Diamond’s made a lot of mistakes, but by far the weirdest criticism I’ve seen leveled at her in light of Pale Rose is that she shouldn’t have bothered with the dual identities, she should have just tried to save earth using her power and influence as a Diamond.

And that’s a strange accusation to throw at her because… she did do that.

We saw her do that.

It didn’t work.

I would go back and transcribe all of the dialogue from this scene, but I really don’t feel like it’s necessary. Just look at the body language here: Pink Diamond has NO power in this setting. She tried to convince the Diamonds to leave earth alone, and she couldn’t. The one time she even attempts to speak in this scene, Blue shuts her down before she can get a word in edgewise.

Pink’s relationship with the other Diamonds is clearly analogous to that between a child and her parents, and I think people are forgetting just how hard it is to stand up to your parents even when you know that what they’re doing is wrong.

Usually, the only recourse a child has in this situation is an outside authority figure like a teacher or another relative, but Pink Diamond doesn’t have that. Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond are the god queens of their society. There is nobody for Pink to turn to and ask for help in convincing them to change their mind.

The only other authority figure Pink could possibly have turned to is White Diamond, and she’s still an enigma. Just about the only thing we can say about White is that she exists, and even that is still somewhat uncertain. It’s entirely possible that Pink DID go to White Diamond for help and we simply haven’t seen the effect (or lack there of) of White’s counsel.

All of which is to say that Pink Diamond really didn’t have any good options. She couldn’t convince them to abandon the earth after the colony had been started. Had she openly rebelled against them (which would have taken a TREMENDOUS amount of courage) they would have just sent her to her proverbial room without dinner and completed the colony themselves.

So Pink did what she had to do: she created an enemy of Homeworld and made it so conquering the earth more trouble than it was worth. She followed the age old advice of the internet: Always be yourself, unless you can be Batman. Then always be Batman.
