to be Honest™ i hate when keith is referred to as a dropout. it’s a misconception some characters in the show have of him that has been translated to the fandom and it’s :// and makes him seem lazy and unmotivated even though we know that’s very not true and very Not keith. he was expelled, yes. kicked out, yes. he didn’t go back because he couldn’t but he never chose to leave. in the pilot he straight up said “after getting booted from the garrison I felt kinda lost” while looking sad and reminiscent, why would he willingly impose that kinda feeling on himself
we kno next to nothing about keith’s life pre and during the garrison, but i have a strong feeling that that was maybe one of the few, if not The one place he probably up till that point felt where he could belong and again, I just, very Strongly don’t believe that he’d dropout and that it’s insulting to continuously insinuate that of him
I hope you don’t mind me adding a little to this, but this is something that drives me crazy in a lot of fanworks. I see flashbacks and Garrison AU’s all the time where Keith (even before Shiro is lost on Kerberos) is portrayed as a delinquent, never shows up to class, gets bad grades, and just all-around doesn’t try very hard.
But I think it’s pretty clear the Garrison is not a compulsory institution. This is isn’t like a high school in the US where all kids are legally required to attend unless they meet certain requirements for homeschool. They enlist. It is a choice.
Keith, whatever his reasons, joined because he wanted to. He wanted to be there. It was important to him. And I don’t believe for a second that he would have squandered all that away without a good reason.
Also, Iverson literally says that Keith was the best student of his class. I can’t see a teacher saying that about someone he viewed as a delinquent even if Keith did get kicked out for a discipline issues.
I am confident Keith’s discipline issues came in a moment of grief over losing Shiro.
