Filmmakers fascinate me. The people behind Forrest Gump worked painstakingly hard to create groundbreaking special effects and one-of-a-kind props in order to pull off the illusion that Lt. Dan really didn’t have legs, instead of simply hiring an actor who was an amputee. There are so many examples of this; filmmakers going to incredibly complicated lengths in order to “photoshop” a disability because apparently it’s too hard to hire an actual actor with a disability.

At the people reblogging saying that Lt. Dan had legs in the beginning/end of the film:

They used several stunt doubles for other characters, including Tom Hanks’ brother when Forrest was running across the country. It would not have been hard to bring in two actors, one with legs and one without. Besides, every time we saw him, several years had passed. It really wouldn’t have been that hard to create the illusion using two actors.

paintmeahero said: At that point, they did not have the capability to do the kind of effects that they did for Captain America.  They’d have to hire two separate actors, and deal with it that way. Lt. Dan wasn’t really that much older after he’d lost his legs. It just isn’t feasible to do it and keep continuity.

People who defend the incredibly complicated plights of filmmakers fascinate me. You folks are making this a lot harder than it has to be. The people behind Forrest Gump spent months creating a special wheelchair that would hide the actor’s legs. They spent hours setting up the perfect shots. They used CGI unlike anything that anyone has ever seen in order to cut out his legs. At one point, they cut out a piece of the boat so that he could hide his legs. They then used advanced CGI to carefully put that piece of the boat back over said legs. They fully admitted that they went to impossible lengths to try to get these tricks perfected.

Forget about CGI for a minute.

Literally literally all they needed to do was get two white guys with brown hair who had a similar height/build, one of which was an amputee. A few minutes in makeup to make them look somewhat identical. Boom. This isn’t rocket science.
