About 8 years ago, at my first job ever, I worked at this popular chain that sold really nice, expensive glass items. I mostly worked on the floor and would help out at the register only if they really needed it.

One day about 10 minutes before we were supposed to close, I was helping the cashier by wrapping the glass and bagging them. The other cashier was also 16 and we knew she had dyslexia but it didn’t hinder her at work. A lady came up with these glass figurines that were limited time only figurines and wouldn’t ever be back in stock again. She mentioned how she was glad she had gotten to the store just in time, before they were completely sold out as she was buying the last ones. I had finished wrapping and bagging the items as the cashier was handing the woman her change. The cashier said the change amount back in the wrong order but the change amount was correct. The cashier quickly apologized and said, “I’m terribly sorry I mean $6.57, not $7.65. I have dyslexia, but I assure your change is correct. Again I’m so sorry.” The customer looked her and said, “Well sweetheart, looks like someone needs to go back to school to learn to count.” I looked at the cashier and she looked like she was about to cry because that lady was just a massive asshole out of nowhere for no reason. The cashier apologized and did nothing wrong, so there was no reason for that.

Well, as the woman reached for the bag in my hand I extended my arm but made sure to release my grip on the bag before she had completely grasped it. Her hand was close enough to the bag so that on camera it would just look like an accident. A second later you could hear the shattering of glass of the last in stock limited edition items she was so excited to have because there was no chance of them being in production again. And my response was just “Oops…”
