With the fundraiser post about Greece going about, I have seen on my dash a huge variety of tags in the past few hours, ranging from “lol kickstart the whole country that will work” to “haha they are so fucked” and from “how about Greeks pay for their own messes” to “omg this is way too funny” or “tbh I snorted from laughter too funny”.

No. It’s not. It’s not way too funny.

What it is, is a 60 euro limit on withdrawals from ATMs drying the market up to the point that people are stealing leftovers from trashcans. It’s queues of dozens of people in front of said ATMs, because bills run out at 9 am. It’s people dying of heatstroke from waiting outside of banks to beg for a few euros. It’s a huge percentage of the population living under the UN set poverty line. It’s pensioners getting 600 euros a month in a country where this is barely enough to pay the “solidarity”/”crisis” taxes, and thus 44.8% of these pensioners living in extreme conditions of poverty. It’s the youth unemployment rate being at around 50%, and in fact closer to 60% in the case of young women. It’s a country on the brink of total collapse, and it’s millions of people without a future. It’s tensions rising higher and higher, bringing Greece closer than ever to a socioeconomic meltdown and a new civil war.
