Boy hugs chicken is back! This time the boy has a haircut and the chicken doubts if she has the right boy. [watch video]

i like this because i’m like 100% sure she doesn’t doubt the boy, she’s just dodging that gross rooster that’s coming on way too strong

Why is the rooster gross though? He looks perfectly fine to me, or is it because he’s male?

because he’s showing courting behavior which means he’s trying to mate with her and she’s obviously not interested because she just wants to hug her bae

because when roosters breed females, they stand on their backs and grip their back feathers and the backs of their heads with their beaks and talons, which is less than pleasant for the hens. more dominant hens run away from males (like here, i assume she’s either just reached maturity, or more dominant) and more submissive hens will often lose a lot of feathers on their backs and necks due to the rooster’s aggressive mating, and will sometimes even bleed and get sunburnt from lack of feathers

a dominant hen and submissive hen:

it gets so bad that some farmers actually make chicken aprons or saddles to protect them from the roosters

it’s all natural and fine really, i don’t want chickens to die out because i’m applying my human standards of morality to their sexual practices, most hens go about their business just fine despite it and many roosters are perfectly cute and sweet otherwise, but when you’ve lived on a farm and seen the sweetest hens getting bred so hard and often that the feathers are literally ripped off their backs then you kind of can’t help but jokingly call the dudes gross once in awhile

ps: sorry for ruining this cute chicken hug post

YOU MADE IT BETTER! The little aprons are so cute!

Animal behavior isn’t always nice or ideal, but it is interesting! I’ve heard from other chicken tumblrs that they keep their roosters separate from the hens to prevent this and other issues. Also, TIL chicken aprons are a thing.
