While Rowling’s problem with representation is shitty, I just want to reiterate that this article title is misleading, if only to the fact that she did not, in fact, announce anything. Someone asked her on Twitter whether there were any Jewish Hogwarts students, and she responded, “yes, of course” and named Anthony Goldstein as an example, as he was the first Jewish student she created and was named for one of her friends. She did not get up on a podium, announce this, and then expect applause as this headlines makes out.
I’m in no way making excuses for her behavior when it comes to her treatment of minority characters or the vast lack thereof (the Dumbledore issue, for example, or Snape and Hermione both being coded Jewish in all but name, also the goblins), but this distinction is important to make for credibility’s sake.
