So I saw another one of these floating around but I wanted to make one because I love The Prince of Egypt a lot

Prince of Egypt is one of the most beautiful animated films made in lo, this long while. Also: in it, North Africans look like, well, NORTH AFRICANS. Seriously… this should not be hard.

BUT ALSO, even more than being not-whitewashed, Prince of Egypt has variety amongst the characters.  Ramses and his mother and father don’t look like Moses and his mother and siblings, who in turn don’t look like Tzipporah and her family.  And then even amongst the Hebrews there is racial diversity; if you look into the crowds there are people of all different ethnicities, ages, body types.

Setting all that aside, even, from what I’ve seen from the trailers of E:G&K, it glories in violence.  The direction, the promotions of the movie obviously could not be more delighted at the prospect of depicting slavery, cruelty, and most of all mass slaughter in a way that is calculated to sell popcorn (see: Moses in armor).  But one of the things I love about Price of Egypt and have loved about it since I was a kid is that the film has an ABHORRENCE of violence.  It spends far more time than it “needs” to showing the innocent who suffer on both sides during the plagues; it is a film that is appalled by the reality of slavery and the slaughter of the Hebrew infants, but also by the slaughter of the final plague.  E:G&K looks like nothing more than a thinly-veiled excuse for chases, for fights, for a big CGI budget.  Even if it weren’t for the whitewashing - WHICH REMAINS THE WORST THING ABOUT IT, DON’T GET ME WRONG - I’m not really on board with the story Ridley Scott seems interested in telling here.

I was never going to watch Exodus but guess what ? Now I’m so going to watch the Prince of Egypt, thank you

I bet you anything Exodus will not have a scene depicting Moses sinking to his knees and sobbing after the killing of the Egyptian firstborns, something he wanted with all his heart not to have to happen. Just a hunch.

plus its a revolutionary piece of animation that had to create a lot of its own software to integrate its 3d and 2d animation. it was way ahead of its time

if youre an animation fan then i highly recommend the prince of egypt, as its just a beautiful movie from all angles.

Thanks for all the great emails and questions about putting a portfolio together. I’ve been getting a lot of the same questions and decided it would be a better use of my time to write it all out. I’ve derived the content from from my own experience and internships before having a full-time job. As you’ll read, a portfolio is the most important thing you’ll do when applying to a job. I’ve tried to be as detailed as possible.

Part I is for the artist still deciding what to do for a discipline. I’ve catered the last three pages to a visual development portfolio for animation but the principles can be applied to any artistic presentation (illustration, design, even interior design).

These are my opinions and I realize there are many ideas out there which are also fantastic. What I have written are simple truths and tips I’ve learned along the way. This doesn’t represent a studio I work or will work for. I hope it is helpful and can provide some perspective into a competitive portfolio and help you land your next job!

Kind of on the fence with this one. I read the article and it appears that they actually do care about the child, but are scared for her because their families and the town they live in are racist as fuck. They also both acknowledged that they may not really have the cultural competency needed to raise the baby, as they really didn’t have much contact with Black people until much later on in their lives.

So, it’s not so much that they are like EW MY BABY IS BLACK AND I WANT TO SUE THE FUCK OUT OF THIS SPERM BANK, it’s more so I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR A WHITE DONOR, AND WHILE I DO LOVE MY CHILD AND BONDED WITH HER IMMEDIATELY, THE SPERM BANK STILL WAS NEGLIGENT, AND NOW I AM SCARED BECAUSE I CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL MEANS TO PROPERLY CARE FOR MY CHILD

The point is to make the bank realize that they can’t get away with a mistake this big.

The real issue is the risk of them doing that to someone who is racist, and the danger the baby would be put in. It could grow up neglected, abused, or thrown out for adoption with no guarantee of being given to a caring home.

It doesn’t matter that these women love their child regardless.

It matters that someone might not, and the bank needs to be more responsible with the lives it is bringing into the world.
