ways to make a jew feel safe and comfortable:
-let them celebrate their holidays openly around you and encourage them to express themselves religiously. if they invite you over for a holiday, go!! they’re making an effort to let you learn more about them.
-consider any different diets they might be on (ex. kosher or even if it’s passover) when you have them over at your house. a little goes a long way with this one
-if christmas is around חנוכה that year, feel free to send them a חנוכה card!! it’s not really as big of a holiday for us but we do appreciate the effort put into making us feel included :)
-educate any of your friends that might make antisemitic jokes. even ‘grammar nazi’ jokes. standing up for jewish people goes further than when theyre just around. antisemitism isnt something that only exists when a jew is in the room.
-understand that, if they practice judaism, their beliefs arent like yours, and that that’s ok! a lot of people forget that not everyone is either a christian or an atheist whenever the topic of religion comes up. (but also remember not every jew practices or believes in judaism!!)
-if they tell you to warn them before you talk about nazis, do it. It’s really easy just to give someone a heads up before you talk about people who want them dead, especially if they’re openly jewish or a holocaust survivor descendent.

I’ve thought about this too – authors being able to click a box to render any given tag on their work unsearchable so I can see content warnings when browsing but ppl can’t go into tags on purpose for harassment …. that said there’s nothing stopping ppl from combing certain fandoms or ships to see which works have unsearchable warnings on to find stuff to send harassment about but at least they’d have to work a little harder :T lol god
maybe people should just stop making things that are Bad and maybe you shouldnt be pandering to people making questionable if not outright harmful and insidious shit op

I write about my own experiences and they aren’t all dandy; so what? I should be allowed to do so, and I should be allowed to share it and put a proper warning on it.
if you just ban everything bad, no one will be able to relate to anything fictional. hell, if that’s what we “should” do, then we might as well ban authors from writing about dead parents, because some people have traumas related to the loss of their parent(s), and we shouldn’t write about suicide or illnesses or anything negative whatsoever.

Okay, a while back, the tags for a story I wrote were screenshotted and shared around tumblr, and people commented about how terrible it was and I was, and how this story was proof that fanfiction was a mistake. This hurt, and it was scary, and it made me want to delete all of my fics and stop writing.
The fic is a long, plotty ensemble Harry Potter crossover fic, and over the course of the story, an eleven year old muggleborn character uses her new wand to confront her rapist father, and then later, the main villain develops sexual feelings for her brother, culminating in her nonconsentually kissing him. I warned extensively for these things because they can potentially trigger someone’s trauma, and even if they don’t, these are upsetting topics and no one should stumble on that content without warning. And for this care, I was pilloried.
I frequently write about upsetting topics. I frequently write characters being abused. I write in canons where characters are canonical abuse victims and canonical abusers, and I like to explore what this means. I have written a story about a grown man raping a fifteen year old girl, told through her point of view, and I am writing a follow up story about her dealing with the aftermath. I have written characters imprisoned, I have written them enslaved, gaslit, tortured, and brainwashed. And none of this means I condone this behavior.
Furthermore none of this means I normalize this behavior. I write about this behavior as terrible and harmful, as something the victims have to deal with for the rest of their lives. I was abused, and writing about emotionally similar situations is not about coping for me. It’s about expressing the horror of what happened to me in a way that I can make somebody understand viscerally how damaging and horrible what I went through was. Fiction is affecting and it does change the way we think and the way we see the world. When we try to ban things like pedophilia and incest from being written about, the message to victims is not “These things are too terrible to be written about”, it’s “These things don’t happen. You are alone.”
You might think that fanfiction is the wrong place for these stories, that they belong in more serious literature. But professional serious literature doesn’t deal with them with any more sensitivity or intelligence than fanfiction does, and fanfiction writers, being more likely to be somehow disenfranchised or shut out of professional fiction, are more likely to be drawing on their own experiences when writing about abuse. I have seen some disgusting portrayals of rape and abuse in all its forms as loving or romantic, both in fanfic and in mainstream literature. But in my experience, the people who are warning for these things are usually not the same people romanticizing these things and presenting them as okay. The people doing that generally don’t admit that these are things you should warn for.
You say you don’t want people writing about incest and pedophilia on an internet fanfiction site. I do. I want to critique society’s narratives about these topics, and I want people to be able to avoid these topics, but I also understand the value of seeing these painful real world things reflected in fiction. Warnings are a way to enable people to avoid these topics while still allowing this process. Warnings are a way to have it both ways. I know this isn’t what you want. I’m glad it’s not up to you.

I didn’t post anything new! I just saw @cherryandsisters‘ post and was like Big Mood before I saw it a little while later with hundreds of notes. I’ve been mostly keeping mum about my feelings because I didn’t want to seem like I was one of those fans. But now that I know it isn’t just me, I’m going bitch lmao
It really feels like most of Team Voltron are just… not Keith’s friends. Like, they tolerate him as a Paladin and because he’s close to Shiro? But Lance’s attitude towards Keith has really poisoned relations with most of the others. Hunk seems to have thought ‘asshole’ in regards to Keith until that S2 mission together, and even then, some of the stuff he said was, at best, impolitic. Don’t get me wrong: I like Hunk. But he’s not a friend of Keith’s. More of an acquaintance, one that doesn’t rein in his friend whatsoever.
Pidge is a little badass but she’s got away with a lot while Keith constantly gets accused of being aggressive/a jerk/etc for saying or doing the similar (but FAR more mild) things. Pidge can be snappy and rude and aggressive, but everyone just sort of shrugs it off and thinks it’s fine. Keith snaps at Lance after being hounded about a rivalry he never wanted? Oh, he’s a hothead who’s rude. And it just leaves me going 8^) in frustration. She’s a kid and she should have some grace because of it. But Keith can point out a problem in a plan and suddenly he’s a meanie uwu despite being 1) objectively correct and 2) having done it in a way that was blunt but not cruel.
Allura and Coran don’t seem to know him? Keith has long stretches of the show where he has basically nothing to say or do, and I suspect I could count on one hand the number of times him and Coran have talked. Allura is probably the best out of the entirety of non-Shiro part of Team Voltron, imo. She talks to him about important things and they seem to understand each other, but you can tell Keith isn’t in her top ten priorities as a person. As a Paladin? Definitely! But Keith Kogane? IMO, not really.
And Lance……… It is not good. This isn’t to stop people from shipping K/L, but Lance genuinely doesn’t like Keith, and Keith genuinely doesn’t like Lance. Lance sees Keith as this big bully and rival that he pushes on to other people: Hunk and Pidge have known Keith from the start as that. The show looked like in S2 that it might challenge that narrative, but it’s been mostly forgotten in the past several seasons. Keith is pretty much constantly second-guessed, accused of things he isn’t doing (ex. making up that Shiro wanted him as a successor), and generally made fun of. If Keith’s social situation was transplanted on to any other character, the fandom would be up in arms.
RIP Keith. I will always stan, but I really hope the show actually engages with the social shithole they’ve dropped him in.
god ok sorry for tacking on but hard agree. and then in season 3, when keith is obviously bereft over shiro’s loss, pidge calls him a loner and lance says he would be “the worst leader” and that he wouldn’t follow him anywhere.
like god, keith is clearly in mourning and they shit on him for it. even later. he never agrees to be the pilot of the black lion. he’s not comforted by their words. they call shiro a hero and they miss the point entirely: to keith, shiro wasn’t a hero. he was his only friend. they even go out of their way to animate keith looking like this:
sucks dude. he’s really unhappy and they’re not his friends. berating him into a role he’s uncomfortable with isn’t friendship. getting mad at him for taking on missions he has permission to go on and finds morally fulfilling isn’t friendship. waiting for him as a group so they can all ball him out when he literally did nothing wrong but risk his life for a cause isn’t friendship. it made me like the team less and i don’t know how they’re going to fix that. and if they do end up addressing his almost-sacrifice by having the team ball him out for that too… fucking yikes.
u know what. i’m low key bitter about the fact that team voltron didn’t notice how kuron was talking over keith, undermining his leadership, disregarding his decisions AND how keith was obviously on edge bc of kuron’s behaviors
they only noticed kuron was being weird after he started conflicting with THEIR personal plans and ideas. which paints them as really shitty friends tbh for not noticing keith’s IMMEDIATE discomfort around kuron
With Haggar remembering Lotor and Krolia’s formal introduction as a character in one season, I’m noticing a fandom trend that when a character is a mother, this is treated as a characterization in and of itself, and not something that exists in tandem with their other traits.
Being a mom does not make a character more like a stereotypical housewife. And Krolia in particular I feel like is the most recent example of seeing a character as a mother causes people to view them as this soft, emotionally nurturing presence.
That said, this turned into an analysis on Krolia and how she’s come across in her introductory episode.
