i used to think that a foot of parchment was a lot and feel bad when harry potter characters were assigned to write that much
but then i realized the paper i write on is 8.5 by 11 inches.
so a foot of parchment is the equivalent of like, a page and a half of paper.
they complained SO MUCH about essays that were like
a page and a half
wtf guys
get your shit together
No wonder Hermione always got onto the boys for not doing their homework.
it’s honestly not even a foot and a half it’s just one sheet of paper. a foot is 12 inches. like dang if i had to only write one page long essays in school about cool magic shit then i would have been ecstatic.
also 12pt times new roman— the standard assigned size and font for a lot of essay assignments— produces significantlysmaller text than a muggleborn teenageer with a pen and ink quill would be able to manage on the regular, no matter how dedicated she was. ron and harry are frequently noted to be using large handwriting on unlined paper. their homework would have been about three short paragraphs if they were feeling studious.
no wonder hermione was so fucking exasperated! muggle students their age would have strangled them.
Designed a few years ago by Korean designer Jeong Yong,
it is the concept of a scanner reader for blind people. The idea was to
allow people to read non-Braille books and to avoid the costs of a
normal desktop scanner.
I theorized over the last couple days about the Gems having known Lapis was trapped in that mirror, but having watched both Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem and had some time to think, it just keeps getting darker, because I’ve come to the tentative conclusion that while Amethyst and Garnet knew, Pearl didn’t.
Think about how the three reacted to the news that Steven had woken up the gem in the mirror.
Garnet reacted with shock initially:
Then wariness:
Then she tries to take control of the situation and lies to Steven:
And, finally, rage, overpowering her love for Steven:
Then, take Amethyst. Initially, shock:
Then, most tellingly of the gems’ reactions, guilt:
Then the same wariness as Garnet:
Then rage herself, to a degree that freaks Steven out:
Now, Amethyst’s lack of a poker face combined with the extreme reactions she and Garnet have made me think that the pair knew who Lapis was (or at least that there was a dangerous gem sealed in the mirror) but it didn’t seem to add up. Why react that strongly to a prisoner? It may have been a justified imprisonment, to be fair, but they wouldn’t react this strongly unless they were the ones doing the imprisoning.
Now, that’s all fair enough. We’ve seen how dangerous Lapis was, and if Amethyst and Garnet had to imprison her, they had to imprison her. What is disturbing is that Pearl genuinely doesn’t seem to be aware that there’s an intelligent gem involved at all.
Initial reaction: shock.
Then, unlike Garnet and Amethyst, who immediately recover and act like they know what’s going on, confusion:
Then, dawning realization turning to horror:
And then the real kicker happens–this line right here:
“Garnet!” Amethyst hisses, “Do something!”
Who are they looking at in that shot? Are they looking at the mirror, the dangerous Gem they’re so afraid of? Are they looking at Steven, their innocent son, who’s the one in danger/ready to free Lapis right now?
No.
They’re looking at Pearl…
…because she’s putting the pieces together.
Look at the symbolism of the entire scene. Garnet and Amethyst are watching Pearl play out one of her neuroses, alternating between teasing her and trolling her. They are separate from Pearl in almost every shot in this room; together, they are watching Pearl act exactly as they expect, and doing nothing to correct the situation.
Here’s what I think happened: I think Garnet and Amethyst, with or without Rose, were involved in the imprisonment of Lapis. I’m not casting judgment on that; I don’t have enough information to conclude whether it was justified or not. Then–and this is what I am judging–then they gave the mirror to Pearl for safekeeping, knowing that she wouldn’t think enough of the mirror to try to talk to it, thinking it was just a device, something to use and store away as she saw fit. They gave it to Pearl because they knew she’d never think to free Lapis. They made Pearl her jailor without her knowledge or consent.
And that’s gonna make me leery of these two for a long time to come.
I… I don’t have enough gold star stickers for this one.
Have everyone seen this picture of the Danish cop playing games with a little Syrian refrugee on her way to Sweden?
ok? and?
This child has suffered in a country filled with terror, managed to escape and then walked and traveled her way from one continent to another. This is a child in the mids of terror and hatred. Her people have been kicked and spit at. She is a child who have not been allowed to be a child. She is a victim of a war she can’t controll. And then she arrives at the other side of the world, and someone finally treats her like a child. Who see her and play with her and give her some comic relief in the mids of the most traumatic experince of her life, in a country where no one speaks her language and it is so much colder than what she has known. In the mids of war and terror we forget that kids are still kids, and this police officer on the other side of the world reminds us that they are indeed children. Don’t come here and “and?” me!
On our 3rd day of BFRB Week we will be focusing on DERMATILLOMANIA aka Skin-Picking (Excoriation) Disorder. Visit our social media pages to see the articles, videos, news & other interesting media we post. Then most importantly, share it with friends, family and your social media followers!
Oh hey, I didn’t know there was a BFRB Week. TBH I didn’t even know the term “BFRB” existed. Well why not, here’s mine. Scroll on by if you’re easily grossed out. Keep reading if you want some personal perspective.
I’ve been doing this for most of my life. I didn’t find out there was a name for what I did (or that other people did it) until college. I used to be worse when I was a kid. My scalp was a mess. I still do it, but not as much… and I’ve gotten much pickier (hah) with what I go after, which minimizes damage. Blackheads are my go-to. Face, shoulders, and back are my favorite spots.
If I had to describe what it feels like to be a picker… you know those little clear plastic sheets that come on new electronics/appliances? How incredibly satisfying it is to peel them off? It’s like that, every time; it’s such a tactile pleasure that it’s pretty hard to stop after just one or two. There’s really nothing more enjoyable then getting that shit out of your skin.
Things that helped me cut back on picking:
Wearing makeup - I didn’t start wearing makeup until pretty recently. Noticing makeup on my fingers when I subconsciously reach up to pick at my face is often jarring enough to make me stop. Don’t want to ruin it.
Finding a soap that works for you - I have really oily skin/hair… thanks Italian heritage. The less that’s there to pick, the less I’m tempted to do it.
Starting to really notice the scars - I realized that if I kept at it indiscriminately, my skin would get worse and worse. You can’t rationalize-away this stuff, but it is helpful to have motivation to rip your hands away when you realize you’re doing it.
Embarrassment from facial scabs - Same as above.
These may or may not apply depending on how your dermatillomania manifests. Some people stand by keeping their nails as short as possible. I like mine long, but it might be helpful for you. As with other things in
life, everyone’s recipe for success is different. I’m at peace with it at this point. I like to call it my most enjoyable disorder. I have a fairly mild case compared to some people, but it would be worse if I didn’t take pains to control it.
That said, I just gotta put this out there: Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about dealing with this. It’s legit, it’s frustrating, and can be both physically and emotionally damaging. Don’t feel like a failure if you’re trying to stop and it’s not going so well, or because you had a relapse, or because you know of people who have kicked it and you haven’t. Improvement is definitely possible, but it’s not
easy….otherwise we’d have all stopped by now.
- they are mutated reaper versions of not just an already incredibly powerful race in the galaxy but a subset of that race called ardat-yakshi who specialize in literally fucking their victims until their brain rots out through their skull.
- they look like a geiger alien and a crushed spider had a baby
- they have a metric fuckton of health AND a barrier shield protecting them so it can take ages to actually kill the fucking things and in that time you will be frantically running, rolling, dodging, shooting and screaming
- they fire a devastating little warp of health-depleting death that basically heat-locks on to you so its almost impossible to dodge it, and it continues to suck your health from you for a while
- they also like to occasionally harness their biotic powers and just unleash a ridiculous and unfairly devastating blast of power that fucks up absolutely everyone within a five metre radius because being a murderous asshole isn’t enough for them.
- they can teleport rapidly so if you’re fighting more than one of these fuckers (and you usually always are, dont even get me started on the final battles when you’re taking on FIVE of them at the same time) and you take your eyes off any of them for more than a second, there is a 99.9% chance you’ll turn around and ONE WILL BE CHILLING RIGHT BEHIND YOU STARING AT YOU LIKE YOU OWE IT MONEY
- you can’t get too close to them or they WILL grab you by the fucking throat and impale you through the gut with their big-ass claws and it’s an insta-kill move, you cannot escape it once they have grabbed you and you are almost definitely going to die. and what’s worse is that you have to witness your squad mates getting murdered by these bitches and there is very little you can to do stop it except stand there with mmm watcha say blasting as you see your best friend brutalized into a shish kabob like
