I think my favourite fact about the elder scrolls oblivion is that the reason the voice acting sounds soooooo disjointed is because the VA’s were given their lines in alphabetical order.
no offense but how come none of y’all can just like or dislike something normally. it’s always gotta be “this is literally fucking flawless and pure” or “this is shit and you’re an immoral person for liking it” it’s so. Uncomfortable
I’m gonna be real here for a sec, and I’m sorry for being the one to say it. Every single one of you who is advocating for shows that tried to be inclusive and had hiccups to be voted down and be punished by attempting to lower the ratings and sending messages to the higher ups are playing themselves. You all turned on SU, Korra, Voltron, and will turn on the Dragon Prince and She-Ra as well when those also turn out to be flawed shows and not peak respectability politics as well. There is no such thing as a perfect show, let alone the prefect rep.
Do you really believe execs care about what you’re saying? All that they will see is that people hate shows with reps, and that shows with reps get the most hate and more so than shows that don’t even try, so the message to them is that we shouldn’t try since people will eventually turn on them. All you’re doing is making creators see what these shows go through and go you know what, it’s not worth it. Because the level of outright malice is vicious and horrifying.
Execs don’t care what you’re saying all they see is that you hated the rep so to them it’s better to not have rep. If you think big corporations care about your plight then you are heavily misguided. Creators have to fight and fight to get scraps and there are many internal politics on what goes down and how. They aren’t kidding when they say they fight for it. Shows that try will always be held on a higher standard and when that isn’t met it’s punished for trying and those above the shows will go welp, better never include those nasty queers if they’re gonna hate it. Thats’ the bitter reality of it and it will never change so choose your words and actions carefully.
netflix is literally losing money over regions that prohibit queer representation, you KNOW they will JUMP on the chance to cancel shows with rep to replace them with more hetero (mainstream) shows they can show in all regions! so please don’t be the reason they cancel these shows, and please remember that in the end, it is a cartoon aimed at children, there are a lot of restrictions on them already.
Hey you know what studios do in America? Due to animators unionizing, instead of paying all the animators proper wage they started sending animation to be done over seas to lower labor costs. Now most studios’ animation are shipped to Korea and China and etc., which means the designs for the characters have to be simplified for easy character animation. Not to mention the history of American animation overall and how the American cartoon style has led towards more simplified styles over the years.
Also animation in Japan, while it does have plenty sakuga stuff, are actually just budget dumps for the best fight scenes. During normal scenes, characters can be very static and has a lot of holds. There’s also the mouth-flapping thing that a lot of animators in America detest. Everything is revolved around budgets for both countries. For America, to pay animators working wages they decided to cut costs and ship labor overseas. For Japan it means terrible working hours and labor, where plenty of animators have fallen ill or even die in their own cubicles.
So watch your fucking language and learn animation history. People like you are the reason why a lot of studios are cutting costs on their workers in America.
also cool of you to compare comedy scenes to action scenes. Like, it really does come down to the money, but let’s compare apples to apples
Action scene in an American animated adventure show
Action scene in an American animated adventure move (where the budget will be higher)
Low budget Japanese animation (though I’ll grant it’s also dated, it’s what I had):
Hell, these drama moments from a comedy show aren’t half bad
There’s another bigger problem here to my mind:
Visual style is not the same thing as Animation.
Like…Garnet’s wedding dance from “Reunited” is actually very NICELY animated! It’s fluid, it’s dynamic, it’s expressive! It does the thing animation is supposed to do and uses Motion to communicate Narrative.
Buuuuuuuut Garnet’s got a big goofy grin on, her proportions are not entirely “on model” (for the sake of facilitating the big expressive dancing) and the perspective is relatively flat, erego it is “bad” animation.
Except that all of those things are and have been from the very start deliberate aspects of “Steven Universe”’s visual aesthetic. An aesthetic that is connected to the show’s animation by virtue of having that aspect in mind at a design level, yes, but it’s not really the same thing.
The OP’s problem isn’t about animation, but stylistic preference. And that’s a preference which they have every right to! But it isn’t something that can be conflated with nor draped in the supposedly objective legitimacy of citing the animation itself as bad.
It’s cute. It has potential. The theme is catchy. It’s what I expected it to be but with more hiccups. For one you can really tell it’s a crew of rookies. The format and writing style doesn’t feel like modern cartoons, but instead stuck in the 80s format, and I think that’s because the crew just didn’t have enough confidence to fully update things and generally this is their first time writing/producing/animating for TV. When it slows down it really slows down, but it’s still fun. It does not meet the hype in the slightest, which I expected.
The villains are the best part of the show, they have the most fun interactions and dynamics and characterization. Catra is especially well-rounded and compelling, choosing to become worse and even aspire to take Shadow Weaver’s place, essentially trying to surpass her foster mother. The dynamic between Hordak and Shadow is the same as the 80s baddie and dragon, sadly. They lacked the ability to update that in a more interesting way. Shadow is a magnificent bastard with great voice and some depth to her, and her relationship with her wards is interesting. Low-key funny in some of the delivery. Scorpia is just a delight and the most likable character in the entire show.
Now let’s talk crew. Here is where I get salty and I will be mentioning the official hyped up rep that is tokenism at its finest and why *those* people are okay with that
“queer” is such a useless term. if i tell someone im bisexual, they know i am attracted to men and women. if a man tells me he is gay, i know he is a man exclusively attracted to other men. if someone tells me they are queer, it tells me nothing about them. it doesnt tell me who they attracted to. it tells me nothing about that person.
It tells me they’re trying to be a extra lil bitch and that I shouldn’t be friends with them
No, you probably shouldn’t, for their sake.
yall realise thats exactly the point, right
queer covers everyone who is noncis or nonstraight
it covers the identities you want to erase or disallow from the community
it doesn’t immediately tell you private information about someone’s sexuality or gender that you aren’t entitled to
and the person in question may not even know themselves, but queer is what they know they can always use if they’re not sure except they know theyre definitely not cis/straight
you hate it because it’s too inclusive and too broad. It’s supposed to be inclusive and broad. If someone tells you they’re queer then all you need to know is that they are in some way not cis or straight and other than that it aint your business. If being told someone’s identity is none of your business pisses you off, thats a you problem
Imagine saying you wont be friends with someone unless they disclose all details of their gender and orientation immediately upon meeting you and still feeling that you’re morally superior
Man I loved She-Ra as a child but it had the worst fucking case of same-face hell, same-everything, so much so that the entire line of dolls (except for the token dude) was the same mold, with different paint jobs and hair-colours. I’m not even joking. And when I say different paint jobs I mean the detailing on the outfits; every single last character was white. The new series has a wealth of varied designs and I LOVE IT.
