Good God the part of this SU episode that hit me the most was how they used Garnet as a visual aid for the kids’ trauma.
Sapphire and Ruby didn’t get specific fears or thoughts, even if that would’ve been very easy to include. Instead, they got imagery that very clearly focused on their reactions and the consequences of flawed coping mechanisms. Ruby is prone to self-destructive hyperfocus on one thought, completely incapable of moving past it. Sapphire is “calm and collected” because she lets thoughts pile up until she completely overloads and shuts down.
With the mechanics of each coping flaw well-established, Ruby settles next to Connie, passing that imagery on to her. Connie was obsessing over the fact that she went into automatic panic mode and attacked that kid (understandably so). She’s scared of herself, and Ruby was there to show how heavily a single worry can weigh on someone so one-track-minded–to the point of both being blind to their partner’s distress.
Sapphire settles next to Steven. The one who’s always okay and always ready to go until he can’t push it aside any longer and completely shuts down. He didn’t even react to their falling to the presumed death. We saw Sapphire’s breakdown with the visual metaphor of that maelstrom of thoughts spiraling in on her like vultures. Now we have a sense of magnitude for what’s weighing on Steven, and how many things he’s been holding back because he doesn’t want to confront them.
Connie’s ready to tear herself apart over one butterfly. Steven didn’t acknowledge the butterflies as they showed up because if he faced one he’d have to face them all, which is far too much.
Garnet was and always is great every time I see her, but wow what a brilliant and gut-wrenching way to show how messed up these kids are…
half of the notes on this post are people going “um i think you meant girls and also i hate boys they are disgusting” and the other half is boys going “this isnt about me nobody could ever feel that way about me” like do you maybe see a connection here?? and also could you stop??
the problem here is people just feel the need to butt in a post when they feel excluded. there are girl positivity posts in this website and there are boy positivity too, go find them and reblog them. just scroll down if the post doesnt apply to you or you dont agree instead of adding negativity to a positive post meant to raise a particular group’s self esteem
lmao i wish we could just pick a day and on that day every freelance artist raises their prices to at least minimum wage in their country
like so everyone could make that leap at once because as it is it just feels like toeing the line, glancing left and right to see if everyone is going to jump too, or if theyre gonna leave you hanging
that would be so great though because, okay, yeah less people will buy our product, but it would create a new standard
like, this is how it is now, and people would have to just deal

Wow I’m sorry but that made me feel really degraded. I wasn’t going to raise it to $100 or something. It’s a perfect price to a buyer, but my art isn’t worth 20 dollars but that’s not my point.
Yes I know it’s a good deal, but I’m not a robot. Even if I’m someone that “sucked” at drawing, the matter is all about the time spent on my drawings. On average it takes me 6 hours to create 20 dollars worth of a drawing. That’s like 3.3ish dollars an hour. Working all day. Possibly no sleeping until the next day. No breaks except to use the bathroom or to eat 1 cup of ramen or not eat at all. Because of the time limits I’m receiving.
Please keep in mind the only reason people ever charge 20 dollars for a commission is due of the crippling trend of amateur artists selling themselves short at those prices- a trend that artists like Rinji has to compete with. Any self respecting artist knows that is hardly an acceptable price for their works. Rinji knows that. And that is why I applaud them for raising their prices because it is our responsibility as artists to educate people like you that a 20 dollar commission is not a perfect price at all.
I hope you have learned something from this, anon, and please, never, ever assume nor determine the price of an artist’s time if you are the client and they are their own employer. The price is set by them and it is your choice to either comply or move on.
can we talk about how living wage is $15/hr?
Can we talk about how artists should have THAT as a baseline, and because they are SKILLED WORKERS IN THEIR PROFESSION, should actually be charging even more?
I charge at around $15-$20/hr. My dad’s a freelance graphic designer and has been in the industry for over 20 years; he charges $80/hr.
Rinji works at a little over $3/hr
can we talk about how the expectation for low commission prices is a issue, or…?
because $100 is NOT a ridiculous price. At ALL. That’s ~$16.60/hour for a 6 hour commission, which is cheap as hell.
I mean I get why people price the way they do; competition.
HOWEVER: Each commissioner is commissioning YOU because they like YOUR style. Usually? People are more than willing to pay more. Fuck, dude. I worked at a place that sold knife sets for like $2000/set, and people ate that shit up. People spend money on whatever they want as long as they know it’ll be quality work that they’ll enjoy.
^This.
We should really be encouraging our fellow artists to charge themselves as they would as a professional. You’re offering your services because you know your art is worth doing business with. If we’re not going to stand up for our own industry, no one will.
