the US minimum wage that we all agree is too low to live on ($15,080/yr) is far more than many legally disabled people receive in benefits

the maximum SSI for a single person is $8,796/yr
if a disabled person marries another, each drops to a max of $6,600/yr

while you’re fighting for 15 maybe look at that too

Not to mention we aren’t allowed to have more than $2,000 saved at a time. EVER. Like EVER or we lose all benefits completely. In the bank, in cash, it doesn’t matter. The government literally keeps us poor, while also making us pay immense amounts of money for health care that we require to even survive or function (let alone work enough to be able to get off of benefits, not to mention that there are a ton of people who will never be able to do that anyways). It’s a very, very broken system and not one that was ever meant to actually help anyone.

Plus, “marriage equality” is still a huge problem for disabled people (as you can see), which is something almost everyone is ignorant to/doesn’t care about.

DO NOT LEAVE DISABLED PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR ACTIVISM.

DO NOT LEAVE DISABLED PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR ACTIVISM.

Another thing I’m salty as fuck about re: youtube

Youtubers as a collective will go ON AND ON about how this is their job and they make money doing it, and how they deserve respect (they do). But then the second any group begins to hold them to the same standards we would hold a professional in any other job, suddenly they’re screeching about how “GOSH IT’S JUST VIDEOS ON THE INTERNET CALM DOWN Y’ALL.”

You can have it one way or the other. Either your profession deserves respect or you’re a bunch of yahoos on the internet and should be treated and derided as such. You can’t be serious professionals when you want respect and then helpless nobodies when the tides turn against you. Use some of that ad revenue on a PR guy if you’re that nervous about your inability to keep your mouth shut and not make racism the butt of your jokes.

Like, I’ve got fucking two thousand readers and I treat my writing/business account with more seriousness than people who have three to sixteen million viewers. I make a tiny fraction of what they do and I treat my position with more dignity and my supporters and fans with more respect.

If you’re going to be a celebrity, realize what that fucking means and be a fucking adult when people treat you like the actual celebrities with actual reach and influence that you are. And if this is going to be something you get paid for? That makes it a job. And I guarantee that if someone brings your manager at McDonalds a video of you shouting racial slurs at a customer? Your ass would be fired there, too.

Ooho! is an edible, biodegradable plastic water bottle that can be eaten. It is made from seaweed and calcium chloride, and costs only two cents per orb to manufacture.

(Source)

cool, but why?

The main reason is pollution, but I can see this having a lot of application in areas of the world where they can’t necessarily afford to produce water bottles. They’re enormously cheaper to manufacture than water bottles for the same comparable amount of water.

*goes into a bar and orders water orb like A Bug’s Life*

You are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. That’s it. Aces aren’t LGBT.

I mean for one your forgetting a bit of that. Like the Q+.

Mod Bethany

The full acronym is LGBT.

I love me some ahistorical bullshit

The “full” acronym at one point was “GL”, after lesbians fought against male homosexuality being the “face” of the movement (i.e., the Alliance for Gay Artists (AGA), founded in 1982, was renamed the Alliance for Gay and Lesbian Artists shortly thereafter; and the Gay Activists Alliance never included “Lesbian” in their title).

The “full” acronym at another point was “LGB”, only after bisexual activists campaigned fiercely to be included, and is often still not even included in acronyms

The “full” acronym at yet another point was “LGBT”, only after trans activists campaigned fiercely to be included

Queer was added to the acronym after it was reclaimed and re-politicized by ACT UP off-shoot Queer Nation in the early 1990s. LGBTQ has been a thing since the 90s.

ONE Archives, which is the largest repository of LGBTQIA+ materials in the world and was founded by some of the principle members of the early (1950s-60s) homophile movement, which led to the gay rights movement post-Stonewall, uses the full acronym LGBTQ on their website and also freely uses the word “Queer” interchangeably.

As of 2014, NOW (National Organization for Women) agreed to switch to use of the full LGBTQIA acronym, and it likely isn’t the only large social rights organization to have done so

Many LGBTQ+ magazines use LGBTQ, including One (which has existed in some form since the 1950s) and The Advocate, use LGBTQ or LGBTQIA as the full acronym and regularly use “queer” as a phrase (and, in fact, some articles have welcomed asexual people and their narratives as part of the queer experience).

The acronym is constantly evolving. It’s not static. To claim otherwise is blatant ignorance. The modern-day LGBTQ+ community is a result of decades of political activism, social inclusion, and community outreach. It’s not a rigid structure that operates by a strict set of rules about who can and cannot join.

The full acronym is LGBT. Cishets don’t belong in the community. Aces aren’t inherently lgbt. We don’t want our oppressors in our community.

“we don’t want our oppressors in our community”

as if trans people don’t already have to deal with their oppressors (cis people) being in their community

as if LGBTQIA+ people of color don’t have to deal with LGBTQIA+ white people in the community

as if LBTQIA+ women don’t have to deal with GBTQIA+ men in the community

as if disabled LGBTQIA+ people don’t have to deal with able-bodied LGBTQIA+ people in the community

the LGBTQIA+ community is huge and consists of people with multiply-overlapping identities and privileges. we all (unless you’re a cis, able-bodied, wealthy, white gay man) have to deal with a member of our oppressing class in the LGBTQIA+ community

ETA: “Straightness” is a position of power. Ace people, even if they are in heterosexual relationships, do not necessarily perform “straightness” in ways that are acceptable to the Straight class.

Reblogging because osirisjones is completely hitting the nail on the head.

i hate when ppl are like “you have problems with doing things like memory and setting goals? write them down, make a schedule:)”

the aforementioned things make that a little difficult

“Defeat executive dysfunction by utilizing your executive functioning! It’s easy!”

so people are reblogging this post and i’ve gotten a few comments along the lines of “it’s like needing scissors to open the container your scissors are in”

and that’s exactly what it’s like

and i feel like there are a lot of people misunderstanding what this post was trying to say (commenting things like “trying isn’t a bad thing though!!! it really does work!!!!!!”)

but it’s like the scissors comparison

no one is saying they’ve given up trying to open the package–it’s just a complaint because this situation is frustrating

because when people give this kind of advice it’s kind of like saying “but you have those scissors in that container right there!! just open it with those!:) it’s not that hard if you try!!!”

but then when you ask for help because you can’t get the container open or you take a break because trying to rip it apart with your hands is exhausting and hurts, people yell at you for being lazy and not trying hard enough

this post is just saying that this situation is frustrating and how there should be better alternatives–i wish someone could lend me their scissors or a knife or SOMETHING instead of CONSTANTLY being expected to open the package with the scissors inside

what makes it even more frustrating is the fact that the scissors only last one use, so you have to struggle with this business with the container EVERY time you need to use them and no one seems to understand that it’s hard because they all have a knife or an extra pair of scissors to help them open theirs
