Can we all just appreciate for a moment how exhausting Keith’s childhood must have been? Completely alone after his dad died, his life was defined by adults who saw him not as a grieving child, but as a “discipline problem,” and kids who actively disliked him and were jealous of his talent. He never had friends, just rivals who saw him as an obstacle that needed to be eliminated before they could get what they wanted. Just imagine what kind of a toll it would take on you if every single one of your relationships was adversarial, if every interaction was a fight. And yeah, I suppose you could argue that it was all Keith’s fault, that he was moody and closed off. That he invited ridicule for not being humble enough, or charming enough, or funny enough, or whatever enough, except that doesn’t explain Shiro. Because Shiro was the one uncomplicated relationship in Keith’s life. Shiro looked at Keith and saw a lonely kid who needed help. He saw a kid with talent and potential and instead of being threatened by it, he decided to nurture it. More importantly, he got Keith to open right up. And all it took was a little kindness, something it seems no one else ever tried. Sure, bitter rivalry to grudging mutual respect has its place I guess, but God, why does it have to be so hard?? Poor Keith. He deserves better and Shiro knows it. I think he made up his mind a long time ago to be the one thing in Keith’s life that would always come easily and unconditionally. No strings attached.
