Hello, Night Vale Fandom. I’ve noticed a lot of people directing harassment towards POC fans over their dislike of white Cecil headcanons. I’ve also noticed a lot of people expressing their adoration of how “different” the headcanons for Cecil are.

Well, here’s a breakdown of all the Cecils I’ve seen today in the tag (excluding cosplay, including fancasts). White fans, I want you to take a look at this and really understand that you’re not being left out. POC fans are irritated that, once again, the fandom has defaulted to white—defaulted to white on a character who had absolutely no description of him, and all of the “different” versions of white Cecil honestly portray the same guy just in different art styles. And this is only over the span of twelve hours.

Just because a headcanon is popular doesn’t mean it isn’t problematic. Be more mindful and creative.

How about we all have our own headcanons for Cecil and nobody shames anybody for it??? You’re just adding to the problem by shaming people for having white headcanons for the guy, when in all honesty he could be a fucking corgi. Nobody knows what he looks like, and that’s what’s great about him, we can interpret him as we please. Calling someone uncreative for having a white headcanon is also rude as fuck.

Just because a headcanon is popular and happens to interpret him as white gives you no right at all to shame it.

You know what is just the best? This probably won’t get a lot of notes outside of Night Vale fans of color. White fans will see this, feel victimized, and ignore it in order to go fanwank over more blond Cecil, because it is more probable to them that a man in a desert town has tentacles and three eyes and is white, than it is for him to be Native, or Black, or anything but a jar of fuckin’ Mayo.

There’s your fuckin’ unpopular opinion.

Oooh nice someone else did this too :O  I had debated posting mine but now is as good as ever, I hope that is okay? I had a pretty big sample size I took over several days last week or so.

Actual number breakdown:

White: 560
Brown/Tan:  52
Black: 11
Asian: 13
Native American: 8

Other/nonhuman skin color (blue/green/gray/etc): 44

I’m not sure, is this a better or worse ratio of white to POC than you see with casting in Hollywood…?

Well it makes sense to me for most Cecil headcanons to be white considering that most of the population is white. The of POC headcanons make sense in relation to the numbers of POCs in North America.

But harassing people for their own personal headcanons isn’t cool, no matter it be white or POC, don’t make people feel bad because they happen to have a headcanon that doesn’t fit your definition of “inclusive”.

I don’t know, this is just my two cents.

Openly disliking and making people feel bad for their own headcanons.

You’re allowed to not agree with the idea of Cecil being white- headcanons are personal, and individual! Everyone can have their own headcanon- it’s whatever you imagine him as being!

But don’t knock other people’s headcanons.

SIGNAL BOOST: Dying Teenager Anthony Stokes Is Being Denied Life-Saving Heart Transplant Because Of Past Run-Ins With Law Enforcement

Fifteen-year-old Anthony Stokes has less than six months to live unless he receives an emergency heart transplant. But his family has been told that Anthony doesn’t qualify for the transplant list because he has a “history of non-compliance” — partly due to his history of earning low grades and having some trouble with the law.

“They said they don’t have any evidence that he would take his medicine or that he would go to his follow-ups,” Melencia Hamilton, Anthony’s mother,told WSBTV News. Hamilton explained that her son has an enlarged heart, and a transplant is the only thing that will help his condition.

The doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta weren’t very specific about what exactly contributed to their decision to label Anthony as “non-compliant.” But family friends explained to WSBTV News that they were told it’s partly because of Anthony’s performance in school and run-ins with law enforcement.

His family and friends don’t accept that as a valid reason to deny the teen life-saving treatment. “We must save Anthony’s life,” family friend Mack Major, identified as Anthony’s mentor, told CBS Atlanta. “We don’t have a lot of time to do it, but it’s something that must be done.”

Civil rights organizations are beginning to take up Anthony’s cause, saying a child’s past shouldn’t have anything to do with the medical care they receive. “He’s been given a death sentence because of a broad and vague excuse of non-compliance,” a representative from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Christine Young Brown, said. “There was nothing specific in that decision. Just non-compliance.”

Regardless of Anthony’s specific past, his story fits into a larger pattern ofracially-motivated skepticism about young black men. The routinecriminalization of black youth — thanks in large part to the so-called “school-to-prison pipeline,” which funnels a disproportionate number of black teensinto the justice system for minor infractions — ensures that teens like Anthony are often seen as threats. And once society labels those kids as criminal, suspect, or “non-compliant,” their lives are typically considered to have less value.

This is an absolutely heartbreaking story to read, especially considering that I have previously done charity events with this organization and have supported them over the years, and thought them to be very good in their philosophy and practices. I am so, so disappointed right now. This boy does not deserve to be left to die, especially not for such racially-motivated, prejudiced, ambiguous, and invalid reasons. This organization is supposed to help ALL children as much as they can. That’s what I signed up for. Not this.
