gamergirlfriends:

Imagine you started a nationwide book club about thirty years ago and you marketed it almost exclusively to girls and women. You release all kinds of books, but for some reason or another you decided to brand reading as a hobby for women.

Despite this, boys and men join the club because they also enjoy reading. Maybe they’re quiet at first because they don’t assume it’s a big deal, or maybe they just feel kinda weird liking a “girl’s thing” because of how our society is about gender roles.

Now imagine years go by aaaand…the internet happens. Suddenly there is a huge forum for people with shared interests to gather and communicate, to find conventions and to discuss their favorite books. This book club, now a huge industry with an enormous and active community, is seemingly dominated by women. Reading is still “theirs”, it’s a feminine hobby. But men are starting to show up more and more.

The women are largely attracted to the idea of being with a man who reads, because it’s something they enjoy very much and up to this point they assumed no dudes were interested in it for some reason (marketing by your industry)

Now men see that women like this, and they are confused by the fact that they think men don’t read. So they announce that yes, they enjoy reading and they are dudes. Some women are excited to find guys that share their most cherished hobby, and some are doubtful that these men are REALLY interested in reading.

The excited women place the “boy reader” concept on a pedestal, which in turn causes more boys and men to speak up and state that they too like reading. Most everyone likes attention and everyone likes to be praised. It is not a negative thing, it is entirely natural.

The women who are doubtful take it upon themselves to test the men. In what year did Tolstoy write Anna Karenina? What was the name for the religion in Cat’s Cradle and what was it about? What was the name of the book O’Brien gave Winston in 1984?

The questions get more and more specific as the men answer them correctly, and if they miss any they are immediately written off as “fake boy readers”. This is because for some reason deep down the women doing the quizzing don’t believe men have the capacity to enjoy reading as much as ladies do.

To add to this, other men also begin to judge the reading habits of boy readers to assert that THEY are the only guys who REALLY like books. “So the last series you finished was Harry Potter???? Casual.” They do this because they have bought into the idea that reading is for women, that they are very unique for enjoying a woman’s hobby, and they also think maybe if they attack other men they will see their own status elevated to ”real boy reader”

So these men feel compelled to prove their worth to other people who share their hobby. They feel compelled to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they are indeed men and they read.

Suddenly they’re everywhere and they’re mad at being treated like shit and they are vocal about the bullshit hoops they’ve had to jump through just to be taken seriously, to have simple discussions about the books they love.

Now

Imagine someone asking these men

“What does your gender have to do with reading?”

Loki’s age is 1048 years old

huginn89:

mudokun:

According to the captions of the first Thor movie, the battle between the Jotuns and Asgardians take place in Norway, 965 AD. Around this time, Loki was born.

In Thor 2 the life expectancy was stated to be around 5,000. The average human life in developed countries from what I’ve gathered is approximately 82.

Therefore, in human years Loki is somewhere around 17

Always reblog.

Because black people cant be anything other than slaves and hoodrats according to them.

We cant like science, photography and things. We can’t be complex individuals.

We can’t have our stories be seen as universal because Blackness is tainted by white supremacy.

I’ve read Spider-Man since I was 7 years old, and if you read it too, and can’t see that the most important things about the character have nothing to do with race, you’re a piece of shit.  Peter Parker has nothing in his character that has a single fucking thing to do with the color of his skin.  He is brave, he is insecure, he is funny, he is brilliant, and he has essentially the shittiest luck of any super-hero.
I’m actually furious at the “nerds” who said this.
Those guys are just racists with comic books in their hands.
If you read comics and don’t see the massive disparity in respresentation between white superheroes and superheroes who are people of color, you need to put down a comic and look at the world around you.
You can’t throw a rock without hitting 17 different caucasian comic book characters.  This actually made me so angry, I’m not sorry.

*I also feel like I don’t even know how much of a right I have to participate in this discussion.  I’m sorry if I come off like I even understand the issue in all it’s complexity, I’m just… angry.*

All heroes are like that. ^ its never about skin tone its about ttheir personality.

Nope.  That’s not true at all.  Part of Magneto’s history, and what is integral to his story, is being a German Jew.
The X-man Storm is a Kenyan woman who grew up in abject poverty, and was praised as a goddess when her powers developed.
Luke Cage is a superhero whose whole life was defined by his struggle as an African American.  He was the hero of Harlem, and an example to other inner-city kids that they could rise above the expectations others could put on you, and be more than what people labelled you as.
Captain America was the paragon of what people in the 40’s thought of as the American Ideal.
A lot of characters are so non-descript, and poorly fleshed out in their backstory that swapping race isn’t a big deal.  But if someone presented me with The Black Panther, a Wakandan king (albeit a fictional African nation) played by Leonardo DiCaprio, I’d flip my shit.
It’s in the same theme of Tom Cruise being best samurai in the Last Samurai.  It’s Kevin Costner being the best Indian American in Dances with Wolves.  All because they’re white.  It’s insulting.

It’s just that in the case of Peter Parker specifically that his race doesn’t play a huge race in his development as a human being.
Peter Parker was white by default.  That’s it.
We don’t need more representation of white people in media.  We’ve got that fucking covered.

Canada’s rainbow money

Fun fact for Americans: our money is technically made of plastic and they won’t get wet/gross when you accidentally wash them, and you also can’t rip any bills.

Everybody is in love with canadian money, the thing is who isn’t?

The funniest thing ever is to see canadians try to use american money. One of my friends asked me “HOW DO YOU GUYS KNOW WHICH ONE IS WHICH?! THEY’RE ALL THE SAME COLOR!”

its called reading the numbers

americans learn at an early age to differentiate between the faces of old white men

Why is the queen of England on Canadian money?

Because England basically raised Canada until we were old enough to make our own decisions.

America left home super early

and made bad life choices as a result.

australia got kicked out but they turned out alright

omg that kid totally just phased through his body i cant believe they let this go to the final cut thats so lazy. this film has a multi million dollar budget this is unacceptable how could the animators miss that

movie ruined

omg wow, I’m so disappointed in you Dreamworks. I thought you guys were professionals.

ya, lazy much? Honestly, I am disappoint.

This happens several times throughout the film, especially to the Jack Frost character. In one scene, we can see him clearly positioned between the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus…

But in the next shot, he’s gone completely!

This is just lazy animation! If Dreamworks thought that we won’t notice, they were seriously kidding themselves.

And people wonder why I’m in the DreamWorks fandom.

Two weeks ago a man in France was arrested for raping his daughter. She’d gone to her school counselor and then the police, but they needed “hard evidence.” So, she videotaped her next assault. Her father was eventually arrested. His attorney explained, “There was a period when he was unemployed and in the middle of a divorce. He insists that these acts did not stretch back further than three or four months. His daughter says longer. But everyone should be very careful in what they say.” Because, really, even despite her seeking help, her testimony, her bravery in setting up a webcam to film her father raping her, you really can’t believe what the girl says, can you?

Everyone “knows” this. Even children.

Three years ago, in fly-on-the-wall fashion of parent drivers everywhere, I listened while a 14-year-old girl in the back seat of my car described how angry she was that her parents had stopped allowing her to walk home alone just because a girl in her neighborhood “claimed she was raped.” When I asked her if there was any reason to think the girl’s story was not true, she said, “Girls lie about rape all the time.” She didn’t know the person, she just assumed she was lying…

No one says, “You can’t trust women,” but distrust them we do. College students surveyed revealed that they think up to 50% of their female peers lie when they accuse someone of rape, despite wide-scale evidence and multi-country studies that show the incident of false rape reports to be in the 2%-8% range, pretty much the same as false claims for other crimes. As late as 2003, people jokingly (wink, wink) referred to Philadelphia’s sex crimes unit as “the lying bitch unit.” If an 11-year-old girl told an adult that her father took out a Craigslist ad to find someone to beat and rape her while he watched, as recently actually occurred, what do you think the response would be? Would she need to provide a videotape after the fact?

It goes way beyond sexual assault as well. That’s just the most likely and obvious demonstration of “women are born to lie” myths. Women’s credibility is questioned in the workplace, in courts, by law enforcement, in doctors’ offices, and in our political system. People don’t trust women to be bosses, or pilots, or employees. Pakistan’s controversial Hudood Ordinance still requires a female rape victim to procure four male witnesses to her rape or risk prosecution for adultery. In August, a survey of managers in the United States revealed that they overwhelmingly distrust women who request flextime. It’s notable, of course, that women are trusted to be mothers—the largest pool of undervalued, unpaid, economically crucial labor.

Yeah, i don’t normally make shit like this, but I feel like this needed to be said.

Because why is it okay to hate the majority on this website, but the minute someone says something about a minority (which is just as wrong), they’re bombarded by so much hate that they often delete their blogs?

Let’s look at ourselves, guys.  Hating an entire group for the actions of a few, or for something that they literally cannot help (i.e. the color of their skin), isn’t helping anything, and is pushing away the equality that we often say we want so desperately.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS

Recently tumblr has made me feel ashamed to be cisgendered (and white) and it makes me sick because oppression doesn’t fix oppression

urgh thank you, society in general needs to remember this. Just because a few act a certain way dosen’t give you the right to generally hate the entire sub group of people. Take care with your words.
