John Oliver explains why net neutrality is really important, as only John Oliver can
Maybe John Oliver has found his post–Daily Show niche: Explaining boring or uncomfortable subjects in a way that makes sense and makes you laugh.

Here’s an example of sexism in the media. It’s very subtle, but it’s insidious, and it’s everywhere.
Men’s washroom and women’s washroom, each with an ad in the mirror. Both ads are for the same car. However, the text is slightly changed - in the men’s, it tells you that you look a million bucks but would look even better in that car. In the women’s, it gives you concern that you’re having a bad hair day but that’d be okay if you had that car.
The men’s ad assumes you’re confident and powerful and tries to optimize that image. The women’s ad undermines your opinion of yourself and tells you how to fix it.
Seriously. That shit is fucked.
Also adverts in mirrors is fucking creepy
stop calling it “slut-shaming”
stop labeling millions of women you don’t know “sluts” without their consent
no, i don’t care about context. i don’t care that you mean well
we don’t call anything else “[insert oppressive slur here]-shaming”
stop using slurs to categorically describe women and then calling it necessary activist language
a good alternative to the above is ‘sex-shaming’ or ‘sexuality-shaming’
I was waiting to reblog this until there was a good alternative phrase and here we go!
What is it about paparazzi and bringing out homophobic slurs in straight, white famous men?
TMZ recently released a video of Jonah Hill saying “suck my d***, you f*aggot” as he was followed around a Los Angeles neighborhood by photographers. Within an hour of TMZ releasing the video, he appeared on Howard Stern’s radio show and apologized profusely.
Here’s the full transcription, because why not:
I’m upset. Because from the day I was born, and publicly, I’ve been a gay rights activist. OK? Now, you saw a 40-second video. This person had been following me around. Just to give it some context, not excusing what I said in any way. This person had been following me around all day, had been saying hurtful things about my family, really hurtful things about me personally. And I played into exactly what he wanted and lost my cool. And in that moment, I said a disgusting word that does not at all reflect how I feel about any group of people. I grew up with gay family members. I’m leaving here to go spend the day with one of my closest co-workers and best friend, who is gay and is getting married. I’m going to stand in his wedding. I’m not at all defending my choice of words, but I’m happy to be the poster boy for thinking about what you say and how those words — even if you don’t intend them — and how they’re rooted in hate and that’s bullsh*t and I shouldn’t have said that. Look, I think I’m pretty good at making movies; I’m not good at being a famous person. I’m just not. There are some people who are meant for it. If you call me ugly, if you call family members of mine drug addicts and maniacs, I’m eventually going to lose my cool. Now, what I said in that moment was a disgusting and hurtful term. I should’ve just said either nothing or “f*ck you.” Instead I used a word I don’t use in my personal life. It’s not part of my vernacular. I’m happy to take the heat for using this disgusting word. What I won’t allow is for anyone — it would break my heart to think that anyone would think, especially with all the work I’ve done and all the loved ones I have, that I would be against anyone for their sexuality.
Okay, Jonah. That’s a solid apology. Don’t let it happen again.
Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day so we asked Chella Quint, who runs the #PeriodPositive project, to write us a guest blog-post on how to teach young people about menstruation. Here are a few of her tips!
