The issue with self-identified “Bronies” is that they are voluntarilyparticipating in a group culture which goes to great lengths to mistreat other parts of the fandom, especially if those parts are girls, and doubly so if they’re girls under 13.
The issue is that they behave as if the material is theirs, when it is NOT.
You wanna draw extremely graphic sex comics about ponies, you go for it. I don’t give a flying fuck. The issue comes from when you put those graphic things out in public in such a way that young children and little girls are likely to find them, because you refuse to acknowledge that you are not the target audience and that, in this case, you need to cater to the needs and wants of the children who ARE.
Bronies aren’t terrible people because they like MLP.
Bronies are terrible people because they refuse to acknowledge that liking MLP is not a free for all license to harass others that they don’t think are as worthy of liking it as they are.
To this day, I still get hate messages from one particularly tenacious brony as a result of closing down my forum two years ago. That sort of harassment has fuckall to do with liking MLP and everything to do with believing you have a right to my stuff just because you like MLP.
Those are different, if easily conflated, traits.
Adult men are more than welcome to love the show and what it represents, and to interact with it in the same way people have interacted with any fandom since the beginning. They are NOT welcome to use that as an excuse to push out girls from spaces that are rightfully theirs, to harass and assault women and sometimes children in pursuit of their deranged definition of fandom, and to drive people to suicide through sheer bulk of “you don’t belong here” hatemail.
I have seen amazing things come from Bronies, and I have seen horrific things come from the self-same, and I have seen the bad slowly but surely outstrip the volume of the good. I have become jaded and self-certain that anyone who uses the label Brony for themself is either truly ignorant, willfully supportive of the culture, or an active member of the unrelenting tide of hate and aggression. And ultimately, the ones who are ignorant tend to see these asks and re-evaluate pretty quickly.
But the fact of the matter is, the culture of Bronies cropped up around MLP, but was in no way caused by MLP.
And if you are an adult man who wants to watch brightly colored messages of health, happiness and friendship, then by god I am not going to stop you. If you want to write fic and make art, you go for it. But the second you start turning it into misogynistic, child-hating driel, the second you refuse to acknowledge that you are a GUEST in a space meant for YOUNG GIRLS, that’s where the problem starts.
Men have every right to watch, enjoy, and interact with MLP. But they have no right to pretend that they are the True Fans, or that it exists For Them, and all the problems that this attitude ultimately causes.
