That’s alright though. I’m more of a writer. And I have a story to tell.
I have always been disabled. However, up until eight years ago, I could still walk, run, skip, jump, etc. In November 2006, I had a surgery that left me almost paralyzed. I could walk short distances but had to spend the rest of my time in a wheelchair. I was scared and confused. I didn’t know what to do. One day, I turned on the small television in my hospital room and realized that there was an Avatar marathon on. Now, you must understand. I’ve watched Avatar since I was in the fourth grade – when the very first episode came out! So I sat back and eagerly watched the marathon, whispering the dialogue and humming along to the music. When TheNorthern Air Temple came on, I sat in stunned silence. I had forgotten all about Teo! Here was an epic, well-written, character who just so happened to be disabled! Even better, he was a character who didn’t let his disability define him! By the time I reached The Blind Bandit, I was grinning from ear-to-ear as I watched Toph take down the group of wrestlers.
Toph and Teo are two of the best characters with disabilities that I’ve ever seen. Both are shown to have their limitations. Nevertheless, they’re both mentally, emotionally, and physically strong! And most importantly, they overcome their limitations! Teo can still fly around with the rest of his friends and is able to protect his home when the time comes. Toph is still able to travel around with the Avatar and has proven herself to be an excellent fighter and the greatest earthbender in the world!
To me, it was as if these fictional characters were saying, “You can do this! Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise. What do they know!?”
And eight years later, it seem that the tables have turned.
A large part of the Avatar fandom seems to be taking the news that Korra’s in a wheelchair very badly. I’ve seen so many depressing and nasty comments. Many people are wondering how the Avatar can still fight and keep balance while being in a wheelchair.
And every time I see someone comment about how Korra “can’t do this” I just smile and think, “Yes, she can.”
Ferguson won't go in history. History is written by the victors, and unless you plan on doing something real and active in this situation, it won't be you. Get over the fact that people do not care that another person got shot. People being murdered is not uncommon. Stop glorifying the event of one person being shot. It will happen again.
but that’s my whole point. if we let this thing die out, we won’t be able to tell it how it happened, because it won’t be told. i’m trying to do something about it by speaking on a more public and open platform like social media because it’s the best way i can get my foot in the door: i can say something.
i’m angry about this starting to die out because it’s something that got people riled up. i get that this happens tragically often, but if this loses the eye of the media and the public in general then who knows how long we might have to wait until something picks up steam again. i want to make sure we don’t lose sight of what’s keeping us fighting for what’s right for one goddamn second, and the easiest way for me to do that, as an individual in my circumstances is to get my voice heard.
a man is driving his son to school. they get into an accident and the man dies. the son is rushed to the hospital and when he arrives for emergency surgery the doctor says “i cant operate on this boy, he is my son!” how is this possible?
omg one time our english teacher told us this to try and show what a modern thinker he was and we were all like “it’s a woman” and he was like oh wow i thought he was gay i hadn’t thought of that
This is true. I saw a documentary about it. Men’s orgasm faces are allowed in teenage comedies rated PG13, but women’s orgasm faces can often push it into NC-17 territory, no joke.
This is pretty much the equation:
women receiving abuse = PG-13/R
women receiving pleasure = R/NC-17
Ugh. I did a speech on this shit, and watched the documentary about it. Pisses me the fuck off.
So absolutely ridiculous. Yes, please, show us being raped, murdered, mutilated; but don’t you dare show us engaging in sexual gratification. Because that would be…obscene.
When a group of dog rescuers arrived at the market to show the dogs available for adoption, somebody had left 12 puppies on the street – 8 of them were approximately 5 weeks old.
In shock, the rescuers didn’t know what to do. The group had recently canceled several adoption days at the market because of bad weather, so they were over their capacity with puppies still needing to be adopted out. Also, the abandoned puppies were so small that they needed to be fed every two hours, including at night.
That’s when a spayed stray dog approached, lay down beside the shoe box where the puppies were sleeping, and began caring for them.
She wouldn’t let anyone get near the babies.
Very carefully, the rescuers placed the puppies closer to her.
She began caressing them and offering the warmth of her belly to the newborns.
The maternal instinct kicked in and…
after a few hours, she had milk and was feeding the puppies.
The rescue group named her Vida, which means “life” in Portuguese.
I’m not crying, really…I just have a puppy in my eye…
animals are the best
anyone who thinks that animal life is worth less than a human life needs to rethink their life choice
A new test for character design: “The Babs and Kara Test.” Your characters only pass if the audience could still tell them apart if they were wearing identical bathrobes and had their hair completely wrapped up in towels
Named for the time DCAU had Batgirl and Supergirl hang out in bathrobes with their hair up in a towel and needed to make sure their hair was slightly visible so the audience could tell which was which:
i hate when people say that women should dress more modestly in order to “leave something to the imagination”. leave what to the imagination? what do people think is under my clothes? a mass of algae? memes? shinji ikari?
