you know what? this is an important story. domestic violence is important. realising that men can be victims is important. realising that women can be abusers is important.
but i’m so fucking sick of the fact that each and every post handling such an issue has tons of comments saying “feminists are going to ignore this” and “nobody will reblog this anyway because it’s about a man suffering”. no, fuck you. yeah, there’s many problems with mainstream feminism and i agree that there are parts that will not take something like this seriously. but the real reason why society thinks men who are abused by women are weak or deserve it or whatever is because patriarchy teaches us that women are too feeble to cause harm and real men won’t let a woman hurt them. all of this is based on tropes of toxic masculinity and sexism. the people who care about male victims of domestic violence are feminists. the people who want to change these things are feminists. stop blaming the whole movement for those who do feminism wrong and start blaming the patriarchy. also look at the fucking notes and tell me again no one cares. then stop guilt-tripping people for being white feminists or not as inclusive or intersectional as you want them to be. guilt-tripping is emotional manipulation and an abusive tactic. use reason instead. stop pretending those who are affected by society’s ill views are the root of the problem. blaming women for the stigma on female-on-male violence is a strawman argument. if you want to change the life of male victims of abuse, stop toxic masculinity, not female empowerment. fucking hell tumblr.

In Gretna, Florida, Juanita Donald called the police to come assist her and get her 24 year old son to take his medication, as she had done in the past.

On Tuesday morning, around 9:30 am, she called the police to help her with her son Kaldrick Donald and one officer showed up, Sergeant Charles Brown.

Charles Brown ended up tasing Kaldrick Donald repeatedly, and then took him into the isolated bathroom in the family’s house and shot him multiple times, killing him.

Brown murdered Donald in the presence his pregnant sister and mother, and no one can even say why. He was completely unarmed, and somehow not completely sane.

His mother said “I heard my baby say, I want my mama after he shot him, and then I didn’t hear anything else.”

His mother said she was “expecting them to take him to the Apalachee Center like before”, but instead a single officer came and escalated the situation, murdering him in front of his family.

Juanita continued to say “It wasn’t but one officer. Instead of him calling for backup, he took things in his own hands and he goes in the house and he rush him and shoot him.”

She continued to say he “didn’t want to be bothered”, and that he simply walked away from the officer.

She says Sergeant Charles Brown “Just grabbed him and he tased him. Then when he grabbed him and tased him, he rushed my son off in the bathroom and I heard three shots. I was like, you shot my son and he was like, I had to. I said, no, you didn’t have to.”

Charles Brown is now on ‘administrative leave’, or paid vacation, and if this story doesn’t blow up then this officer surely will see no charges.

I always wondered how Arthur and Lewis would act after Lewis rejoins the group. I imagine Lewis would forgive Arthur, but Arthur cannot even forgive himself, knowing he’s the reason Lewis is now a spirit. As a result, Arthur would be a nervous wreck in front of Lewis and is terrified of angering him.

Of course, Lewis would be worried and wants Arthur to be comfortable around him again, so he’d help Arthur regain his confidence one step at a time.

21 year old transgender female Islan Nettles died after being savagely beaten to death by her attacker Paris Wilson. According to witnesses, Wilson was shouting homophobic and transphobic slurs before being pulled off the victim by police.
Wilson only received misdemeanor assault charges that were dropped after only spending 10 hours in jail… Today he is walking free in New York City. He has not been charged with murder.
Islan was an aspiring fashion designer who’s dreams were cut short by the same type of hate crimes that have taken the lives of countless other lgbt youth.
Spread the word about this injustice and raise awareness about savage hate crimes like this towards lgbt youth.

It is legitimately sad that so many movies don’t pass that test because it is literally this easy.

Agreed. Everything we need to know about the Bechdel test and the obscene application of it is the fact that people are gushing over it in a film in which Frigga is fridged to give the two male leads manpain.

That’s… kind of the point of the bechdel test, though?  Passing the bechdel test doesn’t mean you’ve created a feminist masterpiece.  It is literally meant to represent the bare minimum of standards for writing female characters.  Even if a film passes the bechdel test, it could still contain harmful messages about women.  And, as mentioned above, the bechdel test has no stipulations about the types of women a movie should have in it, so it does nothing to advocate for the representation of marginalized women.

The most common criticism of the bechdel Test is that it sets the bar too low, but that’s literally what the bechdel Test is.  It’s setting the bar so low that when you realize how many movies can’t even clear that bar, it shows you just how worthless Hollywood is at writing women. 

Hollywood is so bad at female characters that it typically can’t even deliver two white able-bodied neurotypical heterosexual cisgender women talking together about something other than a man.

The bechdel test can’t be used as the sole basis of judgment for a film’s feminist quality.  See Pacific Rim, for example, and the bechdel-inspired Mako Mori Test.  Pacific Rim does not pass the bechdel test, but it it definitely more feminist than the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode, which did pass.

tl;dr, the point of this gifset’s caption isn’t, “SOUND THE TRUMPETS AND TOSS THE ROSE PETALS, FOR THIS MOVIE HATH PASSED THE BECHDEL TEST!” No, the point is, “this is such a lax standard that it’s ridiculous how many movies can’t even accomplish this much.”

I do believe Metzen’s sentiments are genuine here! And credit where credit is due, taken individually Overwatch’s female character designs are almost all super terrific! You can really tell they’re trying!

But once you look at the designs in aggregate, a sexist pattern still emerges.

• Female characters are allowed MUCH less variance in body type, all appearing very slender with hourglass figures. there are no stout, short, towering, muscular, or elderly women in the mix.
• Where male characters’ appearances may be strange, obscured, or unattractive, all female characters’ faces and bodies are fully visible and conventionally attractive
• Only one male character, Hanzo, could be interpreted as “eye candy” in any sense of the term, and even he is still given inventive proportions that deviate from conventional standards of male beauty (a stout upper body with short, thin legs)

I’m not here to be the never-satisfied feminist; it’s important to accept progress when we see it. I do think Overwatch does a better-than-average job with its female characters, and deserves a bit of credit for that! But the average was pretty crappy to begin with, and we shouldn’t be shy about asking for better.

at a glance, not that much about Overwatch’s character design has changed from, say, Starcraft. like, this is still definitely a step up from their other IPs where women are basically invisible or otherwise undermined by the plot (with a couple exceptions like Sarah Kerrigan, whose portrayal has its own issues), but yeah, we definitely shouldn’t stop asking for more just because Blizzard has started trying to position itself as the good guys.

yeah, i was finding it pretty funny when i saw a couple of people go ‘oh wow it looks like they’re doing a lot better this time around’ and all i could think was ‘lol did you actually look at them because i’m pretty sure at least half of them are more or less a palette swap if the body type is to be believed’
