I hope this letter clears things up. My friend sent in an email and asked Michelle to elaborate her thoughts on everything so hopefully now everyone will have a clearer understanding. UNDER A READ MORE.
“I have gotten one question repeatedly from young men. These are guys who liked the book, but they are honestly confused. They ask me why Melinda was so upset about being raped.
The first dozen times I heard this, I was horrified. But I heard it over and over again. I realized that many young men are not being taught the impact that sexual assault has on a woman. They are inundated by sexual imagery in the media, and often come to the (incorrect) conclusion that having sex is not a big deal. This, no doubt, is why the number of sexual assaults is so high.”—
Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak, on the question “Have any readers ever asked questions that shocked you?”
Read that again. Read it again, and again, and again. Over and over guys have asked her why Melinda was so upset about being raped. This is a girl who went to a party with friends. She was thirteen. She had a drink, because everyone else was. And a senior held her down and raped her while she was too drunk to get away.
And guys don’t understand why she was upset.
Read that again and then come back and tell me again why I should just shut up and take a joke when a comedian blows off rape as a big deal, or women’s bodies are casually treated as commodities in media. Remind me why I shouldn’t care about the very real harm that society’s treatment of women and sexual assault does.
A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the baby's father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it. The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain... than the father had ever experienced before. However, as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point, they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the pain transfer was obviously helping out the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. When they got home, the mailman was dead on the porch.

Never gonna forget the time I randomly got a facebook message from a kid who went to my high school (who was never my friend, he was legit awful) asking how I was, wanting to catch up, etc. I engaged in friendly conversation until, fast forward 10 minutes later, he tells me he’s been stalking my pics and “Were your boobs always that big in high school?”
i was robbed at gunpoint in august 2014 and the robbers pistol whipped me and later went through my phone and posted a bunch of my nudes on social media and sent them to my contacts.
months later some boy i know messaged me because he had heard about it and wanted to say he was disappointed that he didn’t get to see them.
i immediately explained the circumstances and he CONTINUED to bemoan his exclusion from the public viewing of my private photos. he seemed physically unable to empathize.
why is no one talking about the fact that men in a muslim country (turkey) wore skirts and went to protest with women on the streets because a girl got raped and killed by a man ?
they went on the streets for the rights of the women.
muslimmen did.
update: they are currently trending #önceadamol which means “be a man first” to show that men who abuse their wife or women in general are not tolerated
